Guide

Sweden's second largest city, Gothenburg, is situated on the country's west coast and has a magnificent harbour. Also called the natural gateway to the West, Gothenburg’s harbour is a vital artery for Sweden. Explore this magnificent city from the comfort of your own vehicle by purchasing car hire in Gothenburg here today. Book in advance to secure a car at a fantastically low price. Don't leave it to the last minute on arrival to Gothenburg as prices are a lot steeper.

Explore Gothenburg

There is no shortage of museums in Gothenburg. The Stadtsmuseum is located in the former site of the headquarters of the Swedish East India Company and includes an extensive collection of porcelain and the famous Askekarr Viking ship. Visit the nearby Maritima Centrum where you can roam aboard the destroyer and even the moored submarine.

Gotaplatsen is the modern cultural center of Gothenburg and a nexus between the city’s past and future. An afternoon stroll at the Konstmuseet (Art Museum) will reveal the gamut of art styles, ranging from impressionist paintings, Pop Art and most impressively superb Swedish work.

Visit the Liseberg Amusement Park, with it's famous Spaceport at 150m high, as the park is considered as Sweden's most popular attraction. After Liseberg the collected museums are the most popular attractions.

Nearby is the Gothenburg archipelago, consisting of Vrango, Branno, Styrso, Vargo and a few smaller islands each of these has a unique character. The islands located in the south have no traffic on them, and there are many quaint paths passing the fishing cottages and bathing rocks.

East of Gothenburg is the beautiful Vadstena, positioned next to Lake Vattern. Visit the beautifully, imposing Renaissance castle of Vadstena slott, which has beautiful views of the harbour as well as the stunning Lake in the far distance. Originally designed by the Vasa kings, it houses items of period furniture and paintings, including a Van Dyck.

Transport

Gothenburg receives flights from many European cities. Most flights from North American and Asian centers fly through Copenhagen where you may have to change planes with links to most major cities in Sweden.

Car rental companies available at Gothenburg Airport include Europcar, Budget, Avis, Sixt and Hertz. Compare quotes from over fifty companies using our comparison website and we will find you the best deals online.
