Naval Air Station Key West is a military airport and naval air station situated on Boca Chica Key, the second to the last key or chain of islands jutting out from Florida towards the Caribbean. The naval air station is a pilot training facility operated by the US Navy. It is a private airport and permission is required for any aircraft to land here. Though the naval air station does not have car rental desks, it is only four miles to the Key West central business district, the southernmost city in the US. Key West is a popular family-friendly destination in Florida where visitors can head to the beaches and engage in exciting water activities.

Driving
Speed limits in the US vary by state. In Florida, the speed limit for expressways and interstate highways is 70mph. Outside built-up areas, it ranges from 55mph to 65mph. When driving around school zones, the limit is 10mph to 20mph. Limits are enforced strictly and violators are sanctioned with fines. Seatbelts are required for those in the front seats. Children under 18 years of age need to wear a seatbelt at all time. Parking is available in many areas of Key West but it can be expensive. There is free parking at the USS Mohawk Museum car park.

Transport

Should you acquire the requisite permission to land into Naval Air Station Key West, you will need to arrange for your own transport to leave the airport. US Route 1 actually passes through immediately north of the naval air station. This section is particularly scenic, taking in the beautiful seascape of the Florida Keys. Head west on Route 1 and you reach Key West. Head east and you reach the mainland towards the rest of Florida.

Trains
The closest train station to Boca Chica Key is Florida's Fort Lauderdale Station, where you can arrive via Amtrak. From Fort Lauderdale, visitors can take a shuttle bus for around £58 covering of about 180 miles to Key West passing by Naval Air Station Key West on Boca Chica Key.

Taxis
There are a number of taxi and limo services operating in the Key West area. Many can be easily arranged with just a phone call. One provider is Five 6s. Rates are about £2 for the first fifth of a mile and around £0.4 for every fifth of a mile from there.

Buses
The quintessentially American Greyhound buses ply routes within Florida and make various stops within the Florida Keys, including Key West. From Miami, the fare is about £23. Public buses are also available in Key West covering many areas. A single-journey fare is about £1.

Naval Air Station Key West operates from sunrise to sunset. Prior permission is required before landing at this military facility. For the most part, the airport facility serves members of the US Armed Forces and their families. Various facilities are available at the naval air station for their use.

Parking
Prior arrangement may be necessary when parking at any of the parking spots at the naval air station. When an event such as the 2013 Southernmost Air Spectacular is held at the facility, the parking spots for visitors are free.
