Trelawny Guide

The beautiful Parish of Trelawny in the Cornwall County of north-west Jamaica is great for the traveller wishing to explore. The best way to do this is by cheap car hire in Trelawny, which allows you to coast around the lazy island with ease.

The parish is bordered on the east side by the parish of Saint Ann, on the west by Saint James and in the south by Manchester and Saint Elizabeth. Trelawny's biggest industry is sugar and rum production, with the Long Pond Sugar factory - recently renamed Trelawny Sugar - and the Hampden Sugar Factory easy to reach by car hire in Trelawny.

Also a thriving seaport, there are many beautiful beaches to explore along the coastline, as well as 27 fish ponds which still support the dwindling fishing industry in this, the island's fifth-largest parish. Trelawny is mainly flat, with Windsor and Queen of Spain's Valley offering wide plains, perfect for cruising.

Mount Ayr is the highest point in Trelawny, at around 3,000ft above sea level, and there is an abundance of wildlife in the southern section of the parish known as Cockpit Country, where countless species of snakes, birds and insects can be found in the uninhabitable nature reserve. The giant swallowtail butterfly which resides there is the biggest the western hemisphere has to offer.

Trelawny's limestone backdrop also provides a series of impressive caves and sinkholes, including Carambi and Windsor Cave. These are best explored by car rental in Trelawny, as are many others, some of which display Taino carvings on the walls. Fields and farms growing ginger, coffee, coconuts, yams and strawberries can also be found along the road side.
