Located in South Dakota’s southwest, the Black Hills, is a marvellous unspoilt region offering great parks, spectacular monuments and beautiful landscapes, one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the United States.

Black Hills National Park is most famous for Mount Rushmore National Memorial, featuring the busts of four great presidents of the United States. Gaze up in awe at the famous giant sculpted images of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The memorial also includes great interpretive exhibits, walking trails, souvenirs and a pleasant café.

Other popular attractions are associated with the history of the Indians, the Old West and the Gold Rush, such as Crazy Horse National Monument and Custer State Park. Crazy Horse Monument, celebrating the famous Indian Chief Crazy Horse, will be far larger than Mount Rushmore when completed.

In Custer State Park there are buffalo and other wildlife, including friendly wild ponies, to add to the obvious historical importance of the site. For more natural scenic wonders, Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument are noted for their strange formations and crystal ‘box work’.

When you’ve had your fill of the great American outdoors, head into Rapid City, which offers several decent hotels, pubs and restaurants. For those tired of roughing it, Custer has several restaurants offering succulent buffalo burgers as well as some quality accommodation.

There is plenty of outdoor recreation to be found in the famous Badlands National Park just to the east. Featuring a fascinating rugged lunar landscape, this unique region offers spectacular hiking and camping, with plenty of interesting flora and fauna. For something a little different, head to the world famous Wall Drug Store for some of the strangest remedies you’ll find anywhere.

The Black Hills are located in South Dakota’s southwest. By car, the area can be reached via I-90 coming from the east or west. I-90 goes east to Boston and west to link up with I-94 and then on to Seattle. The nearest airport to the area is Rapid City Regional, which offers direct daily flights to and from Minneapolis, Salt Lake City and Denver.
