Miami International Airport Guide

Car Hire

At eight miles from Miami, Florida’s busiest airport and the 12th busiest air hub in the US offers access to the city and other destinations in the South Florida area. Local buses and shuttle buses operate between the airport and Miami, while trains run to the city from the MIA Metrorail station. Still, the most convenient way to access the city and its surrounding area is with car hire in Miami Airport, with Downtown Miami a 15-minute drive to the east.

Who to Book With
There are a number of well-known car rental suppliers at the airport, including Thrifty, Budget, Enterprise, Budget and Hertz. All firms have offices at the MIA Rental Car Center (RCC), which is accessible via the MIA Mover train. Vehicles are collected from this centre, with 6,500 to choose from.

Need to Know Essentials
You will need to show the following documents at vehicle collection:

- Your driver’s licence (both parts for UK drivers)
- The credit card that was used to make the booking
- A passport to confirm your identity
- Confirmation of booking

For more info read our FAQ's.

Parking restrictions vary by state, but expect fines and towing if you park in a prohibited area. Watch the colours on the curbs, with red, white and yellow being no parking zones, while green allows motorists to park for up to 30 minutes. Automatic petrol stations are commonplace though there are some serviced stations. Most stations accept credit and debit cards for payment though UK-drivers should carry cash in case their UK-issued card is not accepted. Car rental companies supply drivers with RFID transponders to be used on turnpikes though some toll routes accept payment in cash.

See our guide to the US for more information on driving here.

For quick access to Miami, passengers arriving at the airport can self-drive into the city. Trains offer a fast way into the city but stop running at midnight, while buses and faster express buses cease to operate at 23:00. This leaves the option of expensive taxis for passengers who arrive late.

Miami International Airport Station runs Orange Line Metrorail trains to Dadeland South Station from 05:00 to 24:00. Tickets can be purchased at the station and cost around £1.25 for a single fare. Passengers can transfer to the Green Line at Earlington Heights Station for access to Hialeah Market Station, where Tri-Rail commuter trains run to Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach.

What most people want to know

The following questions and answers are a selection of the most popular questions. If you do not find the answer to your question, have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact us.

Is Carrentals.co.uk the cheapest?

Yes, we offer a guarantee of the lowest price - because we compare various retailers, we can always offer you the best price in town.

What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.

Are there any additional costs?

In general, our rates are all-inclusive. Should there be any additional costs, our booking department will get in touch with you before issuing the invoice. Should you object, you can always cancel your reservation with no obligations attached (at least 48 hours in advance).

What kind of insurance is applicable to my car rental?

In general, Liability Insurance, Fire Insurance, All-Risks Insurance and Theft Insurance are included in the cost of your rental car.

What is a worry-free label?

This label indicates that a rental car satisfies the following requirements: Unlimited kilometers, no excess liability (and no excess cover available), sustainable energy policy, and that the car rental company has a good reputation. Availability of cars satisfying these four requirements will speed up the selection of a suitable vehicle for you.

How can I change or cancel my reservation?

You can cancel your reservation through "My Account". We recommend contacting us by phone if your changes to your booking or cancellation takes place at short notice (48 hours or less).

When will I get a confirmation of my booking?

Most reservations will receive confirmation within minutes after payment takes place. We recommend contacting our Booking Department for last minute reservations (pick-up within 48 hours).
