Central Sweden, just north from Stockholm, is an area of vast lakes and woods, where mining and timber are very important trades. The copper mine was the world's primary mine during the seventeenth century. The public company, Stora, is perhaps the oldest in the world. The mining region of the Great Copper Mountain of Falun Central Station is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Falun is a small town; therefore, exploration by foot is possible. A bicycle is also an optimal form of transportation. Bus far in Falun is reasonable and infants ride free. If you would rather take a taxi cab, which will cost a good deal more, you will need to call ahead and have one sent to pick you up, as catching one on the street can be extremely difficult. Taxicabs are most likely to be available for hailing on the streets near the taxi stand at the railway station or downtown on the weekend. Parking is free on most of the streets in Falun. Pick up a car hire from the Falun Central Station car hire location if you prefer to get around via car, especially if you are arriving at the airport.

A portion of the copper mine remains open to tourists. The guided tour, with available English translation, lasts about one hour, in which you are taken underground for more the sixty meters. During the months of May through September, with the exception of July, the mine is open daily from ten to five. In July, the mine stays open an extra hour until six. From October to April, the mine is open to tourists on the weekends from twelve-thirty until two-thirty in the afternoon.
