Adam Sperry InterRent Fuerteventura Airport
“Simple and efficient!”

“I am always a bit wary of rentals in Spain, but i need not have worried with carrentals. The booking process was easy and received all the necessary confirmation and email information on what to do when i arrive etc. On arrival in the FUE terminal, they were easy to locate, not sitting immediately with the other rental companies so i had to look over the hall for a minute, but part of goldcar it would seem. With one person serving, there was a wait, but only 1 person in front of me, whereas other suppliers had quite a queue. The process took 10 mins and we were on out way. We went outside to collect the car, checked it over against the report and drove out. Enjoyed a week use before returning and the process was even easier on return. I parked up in a bay, dropped keys with attendant and left to check in for my flight. I received an email maybe 30 mins later to confirm the car checked in with a zero invoice to confirm no further charges etc.. All in all the process was simple and efficient and I would definitely use again.”

“Very easy to book”

“Very easy to book, very competitive prices and extremely helpful when things doesn't go well. Just makes me extremely unhappy when I book a certain "car category or similar" and I get one car that doesn't even gets closer and no even close to similar (misleading advertising) of a certain car type category!!”

Fuerteventura Airport Guide

Car Hire

Fuerteventura Airport, also known locally as El Matorral Airport, is located just five miles south of the city of Puerto del Rosario. This airport is one of the major gateways into the Canary Islands. It is located on the island of Fuerteventura, the second largest island of the archipelago. Transportation options on the island are limited to buses, taxis and car hire. The travel time to Puerto del Rosario is less than 20 minutes. Because of the limited public transportation options, self-driving is the most popular way to explore the island.

Who to Book With
The airport offers plenty of car hire options, with the following international firms having car hire desks: Avis, Hertz and Payless. Local car hire companies, such as Cicar and Top Car Auto Reisen, offer services as well. The car hire desks are located right in the terminal building, on the ground floor.

Need to Know Essentials
To hire a car in Spain, drivers need to be at least 21 years of age and will require the following documents:

- Driver’s licence (both parts for UK licence holders or an International Driver’s Licence for non-EU drivers)
- The credit card with which the reservation was made
- Passport to confirm your ID
- Booking number

Driving
Drivers need to beware of specific driving laws in Spain, including always having the following documents on hand: vehicle registration or hire documents, insurance documents, driver’s licence and passport (if driver’s licence has no photograph). Children under the age of three must use a child seat and children under the age of 12 may not sit in the front passenger seat. Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Carrying two warning triangles and visibility vests in the vehicle is mandatory, and on-the-spot fines are levied by the police for non-compliance. Automatic pumps, especially at night and lunch time hours (12:00 to 15:00), accept credit cards. However, those using UK-issued cards may want to contact their card supplier prior to travel to ensure they can use their card in Spain.

See our guide to Spain for more information on driving here.

Transport

Self-driving is the easiest way to get to the major city of Puerto del Rosario as well as to explore the rest of the island. Other transportation options include buses and taxis. The main city is only a 15 to 20-minute journey away.

Taxis
Taxis are a reasonable transportation option on Fuerteventura. However, visitors should keep in mind that taxis cannot pick up passengers outside their zone. At the airport, taxis are located just outside the Arrivals hall. Taxi rates vary depending on the time of day and are most expensive between 22:00 and 06:00, on Sunday and bank holidays.

Taxi prices:
Fuerteventura Airport to Puerto del Rosario is about £10
Fuerteventura Airport to Corralejo is about £35
Fuerteventura Airport to El Cotillo is about £40
Fuerteventura Airport to St Tarajalejo is about £45

Buses
Fuerteventura has a good public bus network and three bus routes―routes 3, 10 and 16―provide links directly from the airport. Service is provided by Tiadhe. Those thinking of using the bus frequently should consider purchasing the Bono BtF, a rechargeable card at a cost of around £1. When fares are paid with the card, riders get a 30 per cent discount. The bus departs from the airport about every 30 minutes during weekdays, with less frequency on weekends and bank holidays. Bus fares are changed by distance and start at around £1. The journey from the airport to Puerto del Rosario takes about 20 minutes.

Facilities

Terminals
The one-terminal airport on Fuerteventura services just over four million passengers a year. The airport primarily services airline traffic from Europe, with the largest number of flights originating in Germany and the UK. Domestic flight connections are also available to Madrid, Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Parking
There are two car parks, P1 and P2, located just a few minutes’ walk from the airport terminal, with a total capacity of 945 vehicles. The first 30 minutes is free and there is a daily maximum charge of around £7.

Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi is available at the airport from Telefonica Spain. Areas that have Wi-Fi connectivity are clearly marked in the terminal building.

Information Services
There is a Fuerteventura Tourist Board information desk and Airport Tourist Office in the terminal building. Information desks are located on both the Arrivals and Departures floors.

Accessibility
The airport provides assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. Those requiring a wheelchair, however, should contact their airline prior to travel. The airport itself is compliant with EU barrier-free regulations and can arrange for assistance on-the-spot for passengers.

Restaurants and Bars
The airport offers restaurants, fast food, bars and cafés. There are food services both before and after security. In the public area, visitors will find the Green Bar & Grill (a self-service buffet) and in the passenger-only area, Fresc Co (a self-service buffer), Pans & Company (for sandwiches) and Pokins (for pizza and burgers).

VIP Lounges
There are no airline lounges at the airport.

Money and ATMs
There are bank branches, currency exchanges and ATMs in the terminal building. Financial services are available in both the Arrivals and Departures areas.

Shopping
Travellers will find plenty of shopping options, both in the public areas as well as in passenger-only areas. This includes duty-free shopping for those travelling on international connections. There are various shops, including gift shops (Ocean Company and Thinking Canarias), a pharmacy (Farmacia), a newsagent (Relay), fashion stores (Lava and Lenita & XTG) and food outlets (Delicious and the Sweet Point).
