Arequipa Airport Guide

Flying into Peru's second largest city, Arequipa? Alfredo Rodriguez Ballon Airport is one of southern Peru's two main air terminals. It provides access to the city itself and the world's deepest canyons: Colca Canyon and Cotahausi Canyon.

Rodriguez Ballon is served by airlines including: Lan Peru airlines, Taca Air, and Aero Condor. Lima can be reached within an hour by air and Cusco is just over 30 minutes away.

Whether you are arriving or departing from Alfredo Rodriguez Ballon Airport, have your camera ready as you board or disembark your plane. The runway provides the best vantage point for viewing the El Misti and Chachani volcanoes.

This domestic terminal has bilingual staff, which is perfect for those not fluent in Spanish. Several small shops can be found in the main hall, including a newsagent, coffee shop and a car hire service.

Alfredo Rodriguez Ballon Airport is located 4 miles northwest of Arequipa. Those with accommodation in town have several transport options. Taxis, located outside the terminal, should charge a fare in the region of 8 to 10 Soles. Be prepared to negotiate with taxi drivers. They have a reputation for overcharging gullible tourists. Some hotels offer shuttle buses into the city.

Public transport, as with other Peruvian towns, can be incredibly limited. While driving in Peru can be challenging, a car hire and an adequate map will have you in the city centre in no time.

When exploring the countryside around Arequipa, car hire is strongly recommended for those who long to travel independently. It provides your party the freedom needed to explore this beautiful region, as well as allowing you to travel in comfort.

If you choose a car hire within Peru, always ensure you have a decent map and a working knowledge of Spanish or a good phrasebook.
