Palermo Centrale is the main railway station in the Sicilian capital. Built in 1885, it is one of the oldest rail stations operating in Italy. The station features a blend of various architectural influences including classical and Renaissance elements. As with many rail stations designed in the late 19th century, the structure was designed to be grand and luxurious, befitting the nature of rail travel at that time.

Each day, an estimated 52,000 visitors pass through the station with a third commuting for pleasure. A total of 19 million passengers visit Palermo Railway Station each year. The station features a ticketing office as well as automatic ticket dispensers for ease of use.

The train station is well equipped for its visitors and their sometimes long waits for trains. There is a restaurant available as well as public toilets, ample waiting areas, parking and pay telephones. A left luggage facility is available for passengers for a small charge.

A range of shops and services are available from the station concourse. A newsagent is available offering daily newspapers, including foreign, as well as a range of magazines. A general store, on the ground level, is well-stocked with any items needed for travelling. A tobacconist is also available nearby.

Travel arrangements including hotels and excursions can be booked from one of two agencies located in the station. Financial services including currency exchange and bank transactions are available from the ground level.
