Santa Elena Peten Airport Guide

The Santa Elena Peten Airport, more commonly known as Mundo Maya International Airport or Flores International Airport, is located in the city of Flores, in the country of Guatemala. It's abbreviated as FRS and it is located at 10a Calle 1-47 Zn1 San Benito.

Guatemala is divided into 22 departments. Peten is the largest and northern most department of Guatemala. Peten is further divided into 12 areas. Flores and San Benito make up two of those municipalities. As well as being a municipality, Flores is also the capital city of Peten.

The oldest part of the city of Flores is situated on an island on Lake Peten Itza. This island is connected to municipality of San Benito and the town of Santa Elena by a causeway. Locals generally call the entire area Flores.

Besides serving Flores, Santa Elena and San Benito, the Santa Elena Peten Airport also serves Tikal and Yaxha. The airport is 130 meters above sea level and is operated by the Direccion General de Aeronautica Civil. Santa Elena Peten Airport is Guatemala's second international airport and is served by the airlines TACA and Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos.

Peten is regarded as being the heartland of the Maya Classic Period. It estimated that several million people once lived in the region. After the collapse of the Maya Classic Period, population dipped dramatically and Peten was soon regarded as the backwoods of Guatamala. In the 1960's, the government began offering cheap land to its citizens to settle Peten. In 1982, the first paved road was constructed in the department.

View this beautiful area with a car hire and a lot of time. The views, the life, the people and the fun is all more tangible with a car hire. Don't trust just anyone with your vacation, trust only you in the driver's seat. You will not be sorry!
