Gibraltar Airport serves the small British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. The airport literally juts into the Strait of Gibraltar, right on the Spanish border. It is located a few minutes’ walk from the town centre. In fact, its close proximity to the Spanish border makes it a popular option for those heading to the southern coast of Spain, allowing travellers to avoid some of the most overcrowded airports in Spain. Self-driving is an easy option, with several car hire companies with desks right in the airport. Buses and taxis are the other transportation options.

Who to Book With
Four leading international car hire suppliers are present at Gibraltar Airport: Alamo, Dollar, Europcar and Thrifty. Gibraltar is small in size and is therefore easy to navigate by car.

Need to Know Essentials
You will need to show the following documents at vehicle collection:

- UK driver’s licence (both parts). Non-EU drivers will need to have a valid International Driver’s Licence
- Credit card with which the car hire reservation was made
- A passport or picture ID
- Booking confirmation

Driving
Driving in Gibraltar is on the right-hand side. Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Using the car horn in town is prohibited. There are no toll roads in Gibraltar and parking options are limited. The border crossing into Spain can get extremely congested and visitors should avoid driving at rush hour times. There are currently only 10 petrol stations in Gibraltar which accept cash or credit cards for payment. In fact, petrol is cheaper in Gibraltar than it is in Spain. The use of a mobile phone while driving is prohibited.

Transport

Self-driving is an easy option in Gibraltar and a convenient way to explore the town as well as southern Spain. Other transportation options from the airport include buses and taxis. The journey into town from the airport takes less than 10 minutes.

Taxis
Taxis are readily available outside the terminal building. Those heading into Spain need to walk a couple minutes to the La Linea side and the taxi rank there. Gibraltar taxis cannot operate in Spain. The trip to the town centre from the airport takes less than 10 minutes.

Buses
Gibraltar has a good bus network and routes 3 and 9 ply the airport route and town centre. During weekdays, the buses run about every 15 or 20 minutes, but less frequently at weekends. Buses are an affordable way to explore Gibraltar, with single tickets costing roughly £0.60. Buses from the airport run from 07:20 to 21:00.

Facilities

Terminals
The airport has one terminal which services about 500,000 passengers a year. It operates between 07:00 to 21:45 daily. Three airlines currently fly into Gibraltar Airport: British Airways, EasyJet and Monarch, all of which provide direct links to major UK airports.

Parking
With the number of passenger arrivals at the airport increasing, new car parks are being added. There is currently a 220-space car park adjacent to the airport and additional parking is being added. Parking is charged at approx. £0.60 an hour.

Wi-Fi
There is wireless internet in the business lounge in the Departures area.

There is an information desk on the ground floor of the terminal building.

Accessibility
Assistance at Gibraltar Airport is provided for passengers with reduced mobility. However, it is advisable to book wheelchairs and assistance in advance with your airline to ensure availability. The airport terminal’s facilities are wheelchair accessible and there are disabled persons’ parking spaces.

Restaurants and Bars
There are several restaurants, cafeterias and bars available in the terminal building. Choices include Bar 8, Broderick’s Coffee, Burger King, Greggs and Real Food Company.

VIP Lounges
There is a first-class lounge in the Departures lounge.

Money and ATMs
There are ATMs and currency exchange counters inside the terminal.

Shopping
Gibraltar Airport offers good shopping options, including duty-free shopping. Travellers will find a range of high street shops, including Boots (chemist), WHSmith (newsagent), Tie Rack (clothing) and the Body Shop (cosmetics). Duty-free shops include Dixons, Alpha Airport Shopping, Sky Shop, Attitude and Biza.
