Exploring Cologne

The city’s most famous landmark is the 13th century Gothic cathedral, the Dom, with its beautiful stained-glass windows and magnificent twin spired structure, which is supported by 56 pillars.

Art lovers head for the Museum Complex between the Rhine and the cathedral. It contains paintings from 14th century Dutch and German masters in a beautiful skylit setting.

If you have the time be sure to take a tour of the wonderful Ludwig Museum. The most popular of the eight museums found in this cathedral city, providing information regarding many 20th century international works of art. Another museum worth visiting is the Römisch-Germanisches Museum, which provides its viewers with historical evidence of Roman past times along the River Rhine.

Cologne offers its visitors a range of eateries from standard corner cafes to first class restaurants, as well as its fantastic breweries selling unique Kölsch beer. Its nightspots can be found in the area around Gross St. Martin in the Altstadt, which has also become very popular with tourists and businessmen. Südstadt, or St. Severins quarter, offers the most stylish and relaxing cafes and bars, but apparently the place to be is Belgisches Viertel, lying only a short distance west of the city centre.

Operas, concerts, ballet performances and theatre plays are held almost every evening throughout Cologne's centre.

By car around Cologne you can see the Roman Dionysus mosaic, the Jewish Mikwe, the medieval Overstolzenhaus, Gürzenich hall, and the Opera House.
