Located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata International Airport, also known as Gregorio Luperón International Airport, has grown enormously in recent years. Today, more than 700,000 passengers pass through the airport each year and is the 4th largest airport in the Dominican Republic. There are many wonderful sights and attractions to see whilst visiting the island, making car hire a great choice for getting around. Travellers are advised to book car hire online in advance of travel.

Airport Facilities

Airlines serving the airport include: American Airlines, Continental, Finnair, Lauda Air, Northwest Airlines, Novair Airlines, Premiair and TWA. Car hire is available and must be booked prior to arrival.

A single-level terminal building services all charter, domestic and international flights. Within the mian terminal building passengers will find a bank, currency exchange bureau, post office and ATM machines. There is also an information desk and tourist help desk located here.

The airport has a lovely selection of restaurants, cafés and bars, and there is a wide range of both duty-free and regular shopping available. A newsagent/tobacconist provides print media in various languages. There are limited business facilities provided by the VIP lounge which must be booked in advance.

Passengers that may require wheelchairs or special assistance need to inform the airlines they made the booking with. Disabled facilities are located throughout the airport including toilets, ramps and allocated parking spaces, which are available in the car park opposite the terminal.

Transport

Puerto Plata International Airport is located approximately 18kms from Puerto Plata's city center, and is easily accessed by both private and public transportation. The airport can be reached by car via well signposted roads. Car hire is available from the arrivals hall, however, prices are far more expensive at the airport so it is always best to book online in advance for cheaper prices.

Taxis and minivans are available from outside the terminal building and run to central Puerto Plata and other nearby locations. Be sure to negotiate a price before getting into the taxi. Buses also operate to and from the airport, as well throughout the city itself. Prices are cheap to travel by bus, although they can get crowded.

There is one car park which offers both 160 short and long term parking spaces and is located directly opposite the terminal building. The pick up and drop off zones are located outside the entrance to the main terminal building. For the mobility impaired is special assistance.
