Massachusetts Guide

Guide

Known as the Bay State’, Massachusetts is one of the USA’s seventh smallest states, making it very easy to tour by car with car hire in Massachusetts. The popular summer vacation area Cape Cod features beaches, top-notch restaurants and numerous attractions that will keep visitors busy for days. The wealthy capital, Boston, has a plethora of draws including its museums, high-end shopping and lively nightlife. Worcester, the second largest city in New England, is a laid-back city filled with tree-lined streets and parks.

Hiring a Vehicle

Hertz, Budget and Europcar all offer rental vehicles which can be picked-up in numerous locations throughout Boston as well as in Worcester and at Logan International Airport. Compare car hire beforehand to snag the best rates possible.

Transport Options

Logan International Airport, found in East Boston, is the main air hub into Massachusetts as well as the rest of New England. It handles flights arriving from all over the country as well as Canada, the Caribbean, Europe and Iceland. High-speed Amtrak trains arrive here from New York City, Washington DC, New Haven, Chicago and Charlotte, while buses come from all over the US. The I-95 runs along the coast north and south, and the I-90 is the main route heading west from Boston.

Car Hire Driving Tips in Massachusetts

It is best not to drive in Boston itself as it is almost always congested and not easy to navigate. Still, driving is the best way to get around the rest of Massachusetts, with driving here being on the right-hand side, as in the rest of the USA. The I-90 has a posted limit of 65mph that changes to 55mph east of the I-95, which has a maximum speed limit of 65mph.

Not to be Missed!

Touring around the state is best done with car rental in Massachusetts, and Boston is a great place to start. Head east for Boylston to walk through the impressive Tower Hill Botanical Gardens or spend the day eating lobster in the bohemian seaside town of Rockport. Woods Hole, in Cape Cod, boasts a natural harbour, stunning beaches and lovely shops, while Taunton is a must for historians and nature lovers.

Weather & Tourist Seasons

Summers in Massachusetts are warm and humid with some rain, and in July expect highs of 28°C or more. January is the coldest month with lows of around -8°C and plenty of snowfall. August, September and October are the driest months and arguably the best months to visit.
