Explore Houston

The sprawling metropolitan area has much to offer its visitors, including beautiful parks, museums, and a variety of excellent day trips. Most areas of interest are within a few miles of the city centre.

The Museum District is sandwiched between Hermann Park and Hwy 59 southwest of downtown. The Museum of Fine Arts (1900) is the oldest art museum in Texas, featuring a large collection of American Modernists, Texan Postmodernists and French Impressionists. The Contemporary Arts Museum presents 10 or more temporary shows a year and the Holocaust Museum is an excellent though sobering memorial.

At Hermann Park, Houston Zoological Gardens features gorillas, tropical birds, lions, bats and an adjoining aquarium. The Museum of Natural Science is great for kids. Inside, the Cockrell Butterfly Center is a large three-story dome where you can wander about among thousands of live butterflies.

Cycling is a popular activity along Houston's numerous park trails, with such flat, tarmaced areas, pedaling is easy and relaxing . The open-air Alkek Velodrome facility is in Cullen Park, 20 miles west of downtown.

By air
Bush Intercontinental Airport is Houston’s major airport and services by major domestic and international airlines, with trans-Atlantic flights, as well as routes to Caribbean and central/South American destinations. The airport is well serviced with shuttles, buses and limos to the city centre, though buses are a preferable and a more reliable option. Car rental desks at the airport include Advantage, Budget, Alamo, Hertz, National, Thrifty, Avis and Dollar. Book in advance online for cheaper prices and a better selection of cars.

George William P Hobby Airport is a secondary airport served by discount carrier Southwest Airlines. Bus service to Hobby Airport is generally more reliable.

By train
The Amtrak rail service to Houston is very limited and the ‘Sunset Limited’ arrives thrice a week from Los Angeles to New Orleans and on to Orlando (and return). It’s often late however.

By bus
Greyhound is the major bus carrier in the US. It’s the cheapest but least comfortable means of travel, especially in Texas where large distances are involved.

By car
By far the best way to get around, and in and out, Houston is with a car. As a city built around the car, Houston has good highways radiating in all directions. Car rentals are available from numerous depots in downtown Houston. Search and compare quotes online right here and plan your trip carefully.
