In the centre of Anchorage tourists will find the Elmendorf AirForce Base Wildlife Museum. Here tourists can view displays of wildlife mounted on its walls. Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary is located on the outskirts of southern Anchorage. Lake Hood Air Harbor, northwest of Anchorage is a popular starting point for flight-seeing trips. Lake Spenard and Hood form the world's largest and busiest floatplane harbour. Earthquake Park, located nearby, displays the results of Anchorage's 1964 earthquake.

Chugach State Park surrounds the Anchorage bowl on the east and south. It is one of the nation's largest parks, covering 495,000 acres. It offers beautiful wilderness experiences including hiking, fishing, and camping in the spring, summer, and autumn.

Transport

Flying is the only realistic means of getting to Alaska. It’s separated from the rest of the world by sea or miles of inaccessible wilderness. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport has 4.7 million passengers pass through it every year. It is possible to fly into Anchorage from numerous cities in the US, and you can catch a flight to anywhere in Alaska including; Cordova, Homer, Kodiak, Valdez, Kenai, and Iliamna from here. Anchorage Airport is located 10 kilometres west of the city centre, with regular shuttle buses and taxis available.

Trains
The Alaska Railroad operate trains from Seward, which is located along the southern Kenai Peninsula, all the way to the northern city of Fairbanks, approximately 470 miles away. Two passenger services operate during the summer season. Along Anchorage's northern railway, the Denali Star operates a daily service from Denali onto Fairbanks, Anchorage and then Talkeetna. To the south, operating daily from Seaward to Anchorage is the Coastal Classic train.
