Old Kent Road Guide
Made famous for being the cheapest street for property on the original Monopoly board, Old Kent Road in southeast London, England, has been given some unduly bad press. If you are visiting today, however, you will probably fail to understand why, as the road is now much more upmarket and perfectly placed for tours into central London. Many therefore choose to pick up car hire at Old Kent Road.
Old Kent Road forms part of the old Roman road which connected Dover to Holyhead and was once travelled by pilgrims on route to Canterbury. The road has a rather violent history, as the junction now known as Shornecliff Road was once the bridge of St Thomas-a-Waterings that marked the end of the authority of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
This status as a sort of 'no man's land' meant that Old Kent Road was once the site of public executions of religious dissenters, with many Protestants and Catholics burned to death here of left in the stocks to starve.
