Explore Lerwick

Fort Charlotte is the highlight of the town. Built in 1665, the fortress has large bastions which project from the corners of the five walls, which seem enormous when looking up at them. There are also some stunning views to be had from the gunports.

Be sure to visit the historical village of Clickimin Broch, which exhibits fantastic examples of Iron and Bronze Age architecture. A fine example is the Bod of Gremista, which is the only evidence of an 18th century fishing counter. Lodberries is an ancient merchants house with a private pier which is a must see if you have the time, as well as the Shetland Museum which tells a story of past island life.

The Shetland Islands exert a powerful magic on their visitors, as there aren't many places in Britain with such natural and unspoilt views. When in Shetland, you can never be further from the coast than three 3 miles. Filled with heather moorlands, flowing streams and lochs, tropical-looking beaches, towering cliffs, and beautiful dramatic skies.

Transport

Air travel offers a fast and efficient method of transportation allowing the maximum time to enjoy the Shetland Islands. In addition to the UK network, Aberdeen International Airport has connections with many other destinations including Amsterdam, Bergen, Brussels, Esbjerg and Stavanger. Charter flights can be arranged to the Shetlands, and there are regular and reliable ferry services to Lerwick.

It is always best to hire a car for your time on the island, as you get the freedom to drive around to all of it's wonderful sites. Arrange to collect the car from Aberdeen Airport if you are flying into the island. Suppliers at the airport include Avis, Hertz, National, Europcar and Enterprise. We offer a far greater selection of car types than what you will be offered at the airport. and at cheaper prices.
