Explore Douglas

Each year Douglas is the location for the TT motorcycle races, a world renowned event, and attracts world-class riders and thousands of followers. At other times of the year life is a little quieter in Douglas Bay, with its scenery of rolling green hills, and open coastland. Since Victorian times, Douglas has been a pioneer in illuminations and at night presents a scene of spectacular beauty.

The promenade is a one-and-half mile stroll from which tourists can spot the Tower of Refuge emerging from the sea on low tides. A lovely walk is along the sea front where tourists will witness the Douglas horse trams, which are the only ones in existence today. On Strand Street there is a fine example of Edwardian splendour, the Gaiety Theatre.

Douglas is a notable spot for scuba diving in its pristine waters, and fishing is also a popular pastime. There are numerous country walks in and around Douglas offering such beautiful, enchanting scenery. There is a brand new shopping centre in town, great for browsing on a rainy day. Within the shopping complex are a selection of restaurants and quaint cafes. A popular delicacy are the Manx kippers, eating usually at breakfast time.

Opt for car hire in Douglas as your main form of transport for your holiday and drive to the Curraghs Wildlife Park, located in Ballaugh. This is a unique wetland with a number of endangered species here as well some rare wetland wildlife. Close by is the world's largest working water wheel, the Laxey Wheel, which is also a must see whilst you're in the area. Another popular attraction here is the Isle of Man Steam Railway, which takes tourists back to Victorian times.
