Camberley Guide

Car Hire

An up-and-comer on Britain’s tourism scene, Camberley is slowly becoming one of Surrey’s more popular holiday destinations. While the town itself is still developing in terms of sites and attractions, it does serve as a great base from which to explore the region. With a rental car, tourists can visit the surrounding countryside and the villages, take in the stunning scenery along the Basingstoke Canal and even pop into London, which is less than 50kms away.

Who to Book With
Most of the popular car rental agencies, including big names like Avis, Budget, Hertz and Alamo, are represented in the city. There is no airport in the area, but the offices of these agencies can be found at the central railway station and in several locations around the city. To avoid the hassle of arranging a car on arrival, consider online booking beforehand.

Best Time to go
Peak season in the city is experienced during the summer months of July, August and September. Even then, Camberley doesn’t exactly see a flood of tourists, but prices do tend to rise a little. To avoid unnecessarily high prices, make as many bookings in advance as possible.

Need to Know Essentials
Don’t forget to take the following items along with you when collecting your car:

- A valid driving license or International Driving Permit
- A valid photographic ID, such as an ID card or a passport
- The credit card used when putting down the deposit
- Printed confirmation

Driving
Camberley is quite a small city, and most areas can be reached by foot. Those interested in exploring areas a bit farther afield, however, will need to hire a vehicle. The roads in the area are in good condition and are easy to navigate, especially when paired with an updated map. Parking in the city is not as simple, however, as there are quite a few restricted and pedestrianised areas. There are some parking spots in the city where drivers can pay an hourly rate, however. Some can be found on street, while others are located in parking garages. For the latter option, drivers will need to park their car and use another form of public transport to get to their desired destination.

Transport

The main mode of transport in the city is the local bus. Camberley has no local train service, but the city centre is so small and most areas can actually be reached on foot. Local taxis are also available, providing a door-to-door service. If you are interested in going on daytrips, however, it is advisable to hire a car.

Buses
The local buses in the city are quite reliable and efficient, travelling as far afield as Heatherside and Frimley. Tickets can be purchased from the central bus station or on the buses themselves. There are several categories for tickets, including single-journey passes, which are valid for 90 minutes from the time of purchasing. There are also passes for elderly and disabled passengers.

Taxis
There are many taxi companies in Camberley, the most popular of which is Camberley Taxi. Such companies can be called ahead of time and booked for pickup. Other local taxis can simply be flagged down from the side of the road. All taxis are metered with set tariffs, but they are not the most popular mode of transport as they are significantly more expensive than the local buses.

Exploring

Camberley has a few interesting sites of its own, but travellers can also enjoy roaming around the city’s stunning surrounding areas. From fascinating museums and historical excursions to abundant natural beauty, there is more than enough to keep visitors entertained here.

Recommended Drives

The Basingstoke Canal - This passes through Camberley and sits a short drive from the city centre. The canal is a lovely place to have a picnic or an afternoon stroll. You can reach it via Frimley Lodge Park, which is well worth a visit in itself.

The Royal Logistics Corp Museum - Found in the Deepcut region of Camberley. The museum is home to the largest collection of logistics equipment and information in the country. Unfortunately, there are no longer any vehicles in the museum, although there are many other interesting exhibits. Entrance for both adults and children is free.

Camberley - This is well known for having many top class golf courses. Just a short drive outside of the city, golfers will find at least three 18-hole greens, including the Camberley Heath Golf Club, the Windlesham Golf Club and the Pine Ridge Golf Centre.
