Situated on both sides of the River Trent, Burton-upon-Trent locally known as just Burton, is famous for its historical breweries and medieval abbey. But its surroundings also make it a fantastic destination for daytrips, as it lies within the National Forest. This means that there is a wealth of beautiful landscapes outside of the town and in its immediate surroundings. Burton-upon-Trent is also close to the Peak District, the famous gulf course The Belfry, and Sherwood Forest. With a car rental, it is very easy to get out and explore the town’s stunning nearby surroundings.

Best Time to Go
The best time to visit Burton-upon-Trent and tour around its surrounding area is in the summer when it is hot and sunny. This is also when visitors can expect to pay the highest rates, however. The spring is also a nice time to visit, as it is still sunny and warm, although it is known to rain more.

Driving
Burton-upon-Trent is quite small and easy to explore on foot, but it is also easy to get around with a car. Traffic is not a big issue outside of regular rush hours, and there are a number of council run car parks in the town centre that are safe to park in. On-street parking is predominately reserved for permit holders.

Transport

Local Arriva buses, which stop near most major attractions, are the best way to get around the town centre. A car is also useful, especially for getting out of Burton-upon-Trent and travelling farther afield. Two routes on the National Cycle Network pass through the town, making cycling another great way to explore Burton-upon-Trent.

Trains
The Burton-upon-Trent Railway station can be found right in the heart of the town. The original station was built in 1839, and today it has a stop on the National Rail’s Cross Country Route that runs between Bristol and York. To get to London, travellers must change trains in Birmingham. The trains are operated by CrossCountry, and tickets can be purchased at the station or online in advance.

Taxis
There are plenty of taxi firms in Burton-upon-Trent, with the railway station and the town centre being the easiest places to find one when needed. Taxis here work on fixed rates, with travel within the town being between £3 and £10. New Street Taxis is one of the more trustworthy companies around.

Buses
Arriva buses have stops throughout the town as well as in its outlying areas. Single-journey tickets can be purchased right on the bus, with the price depending on the distance travelled. A Day Saver ticket is the best option if travelling around a lot, while the Family Saver ticket is ideal for those with kids. These tickets can be purchased using the Arriva Mobile App or from bus drivers.

Exploring

Burton-upon-Trent is an ideal place to use as a base for exploring the Midlands. It is served by a great road network, connecting the town to major motorways and routes heading in all directions throughout the country. A car will allow visitors to arrive at top destinations within the Midlands, with everything from national parks to medieval villages being accessible.

Recommended Drives

Alton Towers - This is a must for those travelling with the children, as it is the largest theme park in the UK and only a 40-minute drive from Burton-upon-Trent. The park is open between March and November and has numerous attractions that the whole family can enjoy.

Stoke-on-Trent - This beautiful pottery city, has plenty to offer tourists and makes for a great daytrip. The city is the home of famous potters Royal Doulton, Spode and Wedgwood, but also has a petting zoo, a museum and an art gallery.

The Peak District - This is a picturesque national park with plenty of stunning landscapes and quaint villages. Spa towns, historical buildings and museums are teamed up with mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking and horseback riding, providing visitors with a large selection of things to see and do.
