Stockholm Central Station in the biggest railway station in Sweden. Central Station is located in the Norrmalm district at Vasagatam. This station is the biggest central for travel in the Nordic area with more than two hundred thousand travelers each day. The station was established in July of 1871.
With the addition of high-speed trains with service from Eskilstuna to Stockholm, the town of Eskilstuna quickly became a fast growing center. Eskilstuna is close enough to Stockholm by rail that it makes perfect sense to work in Stockholm and live in Eskilstuna.
The central station was established between the late sixties and the early seventies. The architect was Adolf W. Edelsvard. Until the mid-twenties, the tracks run into the station, but during a renovation the tracks were taken to the west and the track hall was changed into a waiting hall. During such renovation, the central station extended to the south via construction of the southern pavilion. Now a days, this area of the station serves as a facility for conference. Close to this facility is where the Royal Family waits in the Royal waiting hall when they travel by train.
In the early fifties, the facade toward Vasagatan was altered into a more simple style. In the late fifties, the underground passage to T-Centralen became open.
The central station provides convenient service to the Stockholm-Arlanda Airport by way of the Arlanda Express.
