Tenerife South Airport, formally Tenerife South-Reina Sofia Airport, is one of the two airports serving the Spanish island of Tenerife. Tenerife, the largest island in the Canary Islands, has long been a tourist hot spot. Tenerife South Airport is perfectly located in Granadilla de Abona, making self-driving from the airport to your final destination is a great way to make a quick getaway.
Who to Book With
Car hire suppliers within the airport include Avis, Europcar and Hertz, along with Auto Reisen, Cicar and Goldcar. All of these firms rent a variety of vehicles which can be pre-booked or booked on the day of arrival. All suppliers can be located in the main terminal for passengers’ convenience.
Need to Know Essentials
In order to rent a vehicle, you will need to following documentation:
- Both parts of a valid driver’s licence
- A valid credit card - the one used to make the reservation
- Proof of address, such as a utility bill
- The booking confirmation number
Driving
The driving laws in the Canary Islands are the same as on mainland Spain. Driving is on the right. All passengers must wear a seatbelt at all times and children under the age of 12 must sit in the rear of the vehicle. In built-up areas such as cities and towns, the speed limit drops considerably. There are fines in place for anyone caught speeding, so always keep a watchful eye for changes in the speed limit. Speed cameras are common so it is best to drive well within the limit. As in the rest of Europe, it is illegal to talk on a mobile phone while driving here, so a hands-free kit can come in handy. The police often carry out random breathalyser tests.
See our guide to Spain for more information on driving here.
With no train service linking the airport with surrounding destinations, visitors who opt not to self-drive can chose between either bus services or taxis. The bus service stops at around 23:00, meaning unless you chose to hire a vehicle, you will be left to negotiate a fare with the local late night taxi drivers.
Taxis
Taxis are provided by a number of local agencies. They can be found outside of the main entrance to the airport and run 24 hours. There are set fares depending on the time of day or night you arrive.
