“Not a single problem until we returned…”

“Not a single problem until we returned the car, the lady in the booth at the airport tried to charge us for a missing car ariel-the car never had one to begin with!!”

“Carrentals were great... but!”

“Carrentals were great - although we struggled to 'find' the actual rental company (Budget) once we got to our destination - no instructions on our booking info. Budget, were ok, although their Baby Seats are terrible and don't fit, and don't thinking of asking one of the staff to help you... coz they wont”

South Tenerife Reina Sofia Airport Guide

Car Hire

Tenerife South Airport, formally Tenerife South-Reina Sofia Airport, is one of the two airports serving the Spanish island of Tenerife. Tenerife, the largest island in the Canary Islands, has long been a tourist hot spot. Tenerife South Airport is perfectly located in Granadilla de Abona, making self-driving from the airport to your final destination is a great way to make a quick getaway.

Who to Book With
Car hire suppliers within the airport include Avis, Europcar and Hertz, along with Auto Reisen, Cicar and Goldcar. All of these firms rent a variety of vehicles which can be pre-booked or booked on the day of arrival. All suppliers can be located in the main terminal for passengers’ convenience.

Need to Know Essentials
In order to rent a vehicle, you will need to following documentation:

- Both parts of a valid driver’s licence
- A valid credit card - the one used to make the reservation
- Proof of address, such as a utility bill
- The booking confirmation number

For more info read our FAQ's.

Driving
The driving laws in the Canary Islands are the same as on mainland Spain. Driving is on the right. All passengers must wear a seatbelt at all times and children under the age of 12 must sit in the rear of the vehicle. In built-up areas such as cities and towns, the speed limit drops considerably. There are fines in place for anyone caught speeding, so always keep a watchful eye for changes in the speed limit. Speed cameras are common so it is best to drive well within the limit. As in the rest of Europe, it is illegal to talk on a mobile phone while driving here, so a hands-free kit can come in handy. The police often carry out random breathalyser tests.

See our guide to Spain for more information on driving here.

Transport

With no train service linking the airport with surrounding destinations, visitors who opt not to self-drive can chose between either bus services or taxis. The bus service stops at around 23:00, meaning unless you chose to hire a vehicle, you will be left to negotiate a fare with the local late night taxi drivers.

Taxis
Taxis are provided by a number of local agencies. They can be found outside of the main entrance to the airport and run 24 hours. There are set fares depending on the time of day or night you arrive.

Taxi prices:
Tenerife South Airport to Los Christianos is about £15
Tenerife South Airport to Playa de Las Americas is about £20
Tenerife South Airport to Santa Cruz is about £60
Tenerife South Airport to Puerto de la Cruz is about £80

Buses
The 343 Titsa service runs between Tenerife North Airport and Tenerife South Airport. The service can stop at destinations along the way if requested, but is usually a non-stop route. The bus stop is located on the ground floor of Arrivals. Buses run until around 23:00 and tickets start at £5.

Facilities

Terminals
The airport is by far the busiest on the island, with Tenerife North Airport not as well located for accessing the island’s most popular holiday destinations. Tenerife South handles around eight million passengers a year through its main terminal. A number of budget airlines such as EasyJet fly here daily.

Parking
There are a number of parking options. The P1 general car park is located directly outside of the main terminal. Prices here start at £5 per day for the first five days. The price then drops to £4 per day. There is also an overflow car park located slightly further away from the terminal.

Wi-Fi
There is free Wi-Fi available for passengers. It can be accessed in a number of the bars and restaurants within the main terminal.

Information Services
There are information points located on both floors of the terminal. At these points, a member of the airport service staff can help you with any problems along with hotel reservations and local information and events. These information counters are open daily.

Useful Numbers
Service Centre: +34 91 321 10 00

Accessibility
The airport is equipped for passengers with reduced mobility. There are disabled persons’ toilets and parking, and a number of lifts and ramps for easy access. The information desk can offer further assistance, such as wheelchair hire. The contact centres are equipped for callers with impaired hearing.

Restaurants and Bars
There is one main café in the Departures shopping area where passengers can purchase coffee and pastries. There is also the Bill Bentley pub. This traditional English pub serves beers, hot dishes and a selection of spirits.

VIP Lounges

Money and ATMs
La Caixa-Caja Canarias is located on the ground floor of Arrivals. Here, there is an ATM, although it only dispenses euro. However, the bank is open daily and offers currency exchange and a number of other banking services.

Shopping
There is a wide range of duty-free shops where passengers can purchase a selection of duty-free tobacco, alcohol and perfume. Casa Ricardo serves traditional Spanish sweets while Kids offers a selection of children’s toys and clothes.
