Oviedo Guide

Oviedo

In Northern Spain you will come across a city that is prestigious and charming called Oviedo. This place is the capital city of the Asturius Province and every year there is an International Prince of Asturius Awards held here. Singers, artists and other celebrities are given awards in 8 categories. This event is held in the Campoamor Theater. Another International attraction is the Oviedo University built in the 15th century. They have many foreign students attending and living on campus.

The first signs of settlement in Oviedo have been found to date back to the Roman times, but popular belief is that the city was founded by two monks in 761. A small church has been designed to commemorate this and is dedicated to St Vincent. Various constructions and buildings that were built during the time of the Romans and Nordic settlers still stand today and are what makes this city unique.

The grand architecture includes the San Salvador Cathedral, the Santa Maria del Naranco Hall built in the 9th century, the town hall and the monastery which is home to a museum at the moment. Once you have exhausted yourself looking at all the wonderful sights, be sure to stop in at one of the restaurants or coffee shops to have some traditional cuisine like pork bean stew or the Carbayones, which is local almond pastry. You will find many sporting events that take place throughout the year that may be of interest to you and the festivals are some of the best in Spain.
