A stunning Moorish town lies in Costa Calida. It is called Mojacar and is distinguished by its many white, sugar lump style houses scattered over the hillside. This area is the most popular tourist destination in the Southeast and with its perfect location between the mountains and Mediterranean Sea, it is one of the must-see places in Spain.
The history of this town proves to be the oldest in Spain stretching back for over 4000 years. Inhabitants include the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians, as well as the Romans and the Moorish Sultans. The Moors had the strongest influence over the city as can be seen by the Moroccan appeal that oozes from every corner of the town.
In the 15th century Mojacar was reclaimed by the Spanish government, but the Moroccan architecture will always be preserved due to a law passed in 1987. This delights visitors from all over the world and every summer you watch the celebrations of the Moors and Christians in their fiesta in honour of the Arab ancestors.
If some younger members of the family are not interested by the rich culture and historic significance of Mojacar, then take them down to the beachfront where there is a hive of activity, water sports and modern restaurants that serve pizza, burgers and milkshakes.
Your five-star accommodation can also be found here on the beach front, although the city officials have prevented massive high rise buildings to spoil the views and coastline. You can truly have the best of both worlds here in Mojacar.
