Fuengirola Guide

Car Hire

The Spanish city of Fuengirola has a lot to offer in the form of an exciting city centre, a plethora of cultural and historical sites and a seemingly unending coastline. It doesn’t stop there, however, because when looking at the city’s surroundings on a map, it becomes apparent how perfectly Feungirola is positioned to provide travellers with a well-rounded vacation. Fuengirola lies at the foothills of the Sierra mountain range and is positioned right in the middle of such great towns as Marbella and Malaga – perfect for daytrips and weekends away.

Who to Book With
All of the favourite car rental agencies, including Hertz, Sixt, Budget, Europcar and Avis, have a strong presence in the city, so you can have your pick of the lot. The offices of most agencies can be found at Malaga Airport, only 20 minutes away from town, and at the central railway station. Online booking is a convenient way of securing a car without the hassle of long lines and unpredictable rates.

Best Time to go
The most popular time in the city is during the summer months of June, July, August and September. Temperatures rarely drop below 20°C and skies are continuously clear. Prices rise steeply during this time, however, as the city sees more visitors. To avoid credit card shocks, make sure you secure all bookings in advance.

Need to Know Essentials
When collecting your rental car, the following documents will be called upon:

- Proof of deposit and the credit card used to pay the deposit
- A valid driving licence or an International Driving Permit
- A comprehensive insurance policy, which is often available for purchase when making the booking.

Driving
The city centre is quite walkable, so most tourists tend not to hire a car if they are planning on staying within the confines of the city. Renting a car is quite useful if you intend on doing some independent exploring on the outskirts and beyond, however. Driving in the city does not pose too much of a problem, although some streets are quite narrow and there are a few surprises along the way in the form of random one-way roads. Armed with a reliable map, however, drivers should be able to make their way around the city streets just fine.

Parking, on the other hand, is a different story. Free parking is almost impossible to find and, if it is free, it means you’ll a bit farther from the centre than you might like. Street parking is also tricky, as some areas are no-parking zones. You would do well to read all signs carefully, as illegal parking is punishable by a fine. All other parking areas, including designated parking garages, charge both hourly and daily rates.

You can read more about general driving in our guide to Spain.

Transport

The city has a reliable public transport system, comprised of efficient bus and taxi services. Many travellers restrict themselves to the city centre and beaches, which are easily navigated on foot. Those that wish to travel farther afield will find that the public transport options will come in handy, however.

Buses
The bus service in Fuengirola is quite good, operating many routes and servicing many areas in the city. Tickets can be purchased on the buses themselves, and travellers can choose to either buy single-journey tickets or weekly passes if they plan on staying in the city for longer.

Taxis
Taxis can sometimes be flagged down from the side of the road, but it is often easier and cheaper to just phone ahead. Reliable taxi companies in the city include Malaga Taxi and Taxi Malaga Autonomos. Otherwise, you will find hoards of taxis waiting outside bus and railway stations, ready for the next batch of commuters.

Exploring

Just a couple of hours on the road and travellers can enjoy some of the spoils that Fuengirola’s surroundings have to over. From remarkably well-preserved Spanish villages to the perfect excursions for families and children, you will not be disappointed with what lies beyond the city walls.

Recommended Drives

Fuengirola Aqua-park - Fuengirola can get quite warm during the summer months, so where better to go than the Aqua-park, set just outside the city centre. Visitors will find many great water rides and slides for all ages. There is even a nice picnic area for families spending the day.

Fuengirola Zoo - Another great place to take the kids. It is well known for being one of the only zoos in the country that has tried its best to create the most natural environments possible for the animals. From lions and tigers to elephants and giraffes, the animals on display here make up a veritable Noah’s Ark.

Mijas - Only 20 minutes from the city centre is Mijas, a lovely village that seems to have been frozen in time. While the town offers visitors many great attractions, one of the most popular reasons for daytrips to Mijas is to observe the spectacular views. From here, visitors can see most of Fuengirola and even a bit of the gorgeous Mediterranean.
