Formentera Guide

Guide

This tiny 78 square km island located off the south coast of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea, has been named an UNESCO ‘World Treasure’ because of its beautiful and delicate ecological structure. Formentera has always been regarded as the ‘forgotten Balearic’, mainly due to its size and limited number of visitors. The island now attracts more people to its beautiful pristine beaches. A great way to explore the island is by renting a car. Book cheap car hire in Formentera with us today and we'll compare the market to help find you the cheapest price possible.

Explore Formentera

Ringed by spectacularly clean beaches, this island’s flat limestone plain is a beautiful semi-arid environment, featuring fig trees and wild rosemary fields as far as the eye can see. The east of the island is dominated by a 187m high peak; La Mola, and an 86m peak Barberia, in the west. Both make beautiful relaxed climbs, and have wonderful views of the island and the ocean from their summits.

It is the beaches though, that are the prime tourist draw for the island. Offering both nude and clothed areas, this island has both heavily populated and more private beaches. To reach these stunning beaches we highly advise all visitors to book car hire in Formentera, as buses are not always reliable. You may find yourself waiting a long while for one to pass.

Playa de Mitjorn - Located along the south coast, in the narrow part of the island. It has become the principal area for nude sunbathing, and mostly undeveloped, though the Es Copinyars section of the beach has a number of restaurants and bars.

Es Calo - Along the northern coast, the village of Es Calo offers more traditional beaches, some boarding houses and a lovely view of the La Mola lighthouse.

Es Pujols - This beach is served by the village of Sant Ferran and exhibits beautiful pure white sand with a backdrop of dunes and pine trees.

Cala Sahona - This beach can be found along the west coast, lying near to the lighthouse on Barbaria. This cove is the most beautiful on the island and is definitely a must see sight.

Transport

Due to the size of this island, it is easily explored by bicycle or car. Though there are few roads, they do reach most areas on this little island. Car rentals can be booked ready for arrival at Ibiza Airport before travelling by ferry to Formentera, from leading suppliers Avis, Enterprise, Europcar and Hertz. They can be collected from any car rental depot of the island of Formentera, however this may not be convenient for many.

Formentera can only be reached by ferry from Ibiza, taking around 30 minutes. Most tourists arrive at Ibiza Airport, which offers daily flights to a number of European destinations, including; Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia. Madrid has flights to and from cities throughout the world.

Buses operate throughout the island travelling to all major towns from the Port, departing every half hour. They cost between €1 and €2 no matter where you get on or off the bus, but be sure to find out if the bus does stop at your chosen destination as some may not.

What most people want to know

The following questions and answers are a selection of the most popular questions. If you do not find the answer to your question, have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact us.
Is Carrentals.co.uk the cheapest? Yes, we offer a guarantee of the lowest price - because we compare various retailers, we can always offer you the best price in town. What do I need to do when picking up a car? To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient. Are there any additional costs? In general, our rates are all-inclusive. Should there be any additional costs, our booking department will get in touch with you before issuing the invoice. Should you object, you can always cancel your reservation with no obligations attached (at least 48 hours in advance). What kind of insurance is applicable to my car rental? In general, Liability Insurance, Fire Insurance, All-Risks Insurance and Theft Insurance are included in the cost of your rental car. What is a worry-free label? This label indicates that a rental car satisfies the following requirements: Unlimited kilometers, no excess liability (and no excess cover available), sustainable energy policy, and that the car rental company has a good reputation. Availability of cars satisfying these four requirements will speed up the selection of a suitable vehicle for you. How can I change or cancel my reservation? You can cancel your reservation through "My Account". We recommend contacting us by phone if your changes to your booking or cancellation takes place at short notice (48 hours or less). When will I get a confirmation of my booking? Most reservations will receive confirmation within minutes after payment takes place. We recommend contacting our Booking Department for last minute reservations (pick-up within 48 hours).
