Explore Costa Brava

On the coast, Lloret de Mar lies at the heart of the Costa Brava and is one of Spain’s trendiest holiday resorts. The beach are predominantly shingle and sand, and the lovely promenade along the seafront is lined with tall palms. Nearby Calella has a 2 mile long beach with a watersports and sports centre.

Barcelona is the regions main urban centre, Spain's second city and the country's hippest town. Many of the buildings feature the bizarre work of the eccentric genius Gaudí and there are numerous museums and galleries with significant collections by Picasso and Miró. Host of the 1992 Olympics, with a lovely mountainous backdrop, this is city has a distinct Catalunyan character, making it one of the highlights of Europe.

Further south on the coast, Tarragona has some of the best preserved Roman ruins in the Iberian Peninsula. The first century Amphitheatre offers wonderful views of the sea, and is located outside the Old Roman city. La Rambla Nova is Tarragona’s main avenue on which Plaça de la Font is a stunning square surrounded by historic buildings.

A holiday in the Costa Brava is also the perfect opportunity to see a Bullfight.

Transport

By air
Most travellers flying directly to Costa Brava choose Barcelona International Airport as their arrival destination. The airport offers passengers direct flights from North America and many European cities. The airport is situated 9 miles southwest of the city centre at El Prat de Llobregat. Barcelona is the main transport hub for the Costa Brava. Car rentals are on offer at the airport, in the arrival hall, however, prices are more expensive at the airport than online, and the selection of cars are usually limited, so to secure a vehicle please ensure you book online in advance of travel.

By train
The Rodalies train line runs between the airport and the centre of town (€ 2.15 o/w every 30 minutes, 20 minute journey).

The Aerobús service runs from the airport to Plaça de Catalunya via Plaça d'Espanya. There is also no shortage of taxis available to/from the centre.

Estació Sants is the biggest railway station in Barcelona, located 1.6 miles west of La Rambla. Trains also stop at Catalunya Station at Plaça de Catalunya along the way. From here trains can be caught to all Spanish destinations and many European cities. Tickets are best organised through a local travel agent.

By bus
Central bus station, Estació del Nord, is located 1 mile to the northeast of the centre of the city, La Rambla, near to Arc de Triomf metro, and serves all regional centres in Spain and most mainland European capitals. Local buses leave from here and several other points around the city to towns along the coast and inland.

By car
Driving from Barcelona through the Costa Brava, the A7 coastal expressway provides the most scenic and direct route available.
