Johannesburg International Airport is located 16 miles northeast of Johannesburg centre and acts as a hub and tourism gateway for the whole of Southern Africa. Accommodating almost 12 million passengers from 57 airline every year, Johannesburg International Airport’s six closely connected terminals are always busy, serving domestic and international air traffic.
Johannesburg’s terminals are all housed in one enormous airport building. Terminals 1 and 2 are for international arrivals, while 3 and 4 are solely for domestic flights. Terminal 5 and 6 offer domestic and international departure areas respectively. Information kiosks are located in each of the terminals. A free shuttle bus that departs every 6 minutes, connects all terminals and the furthest carparks.
There is a good selection of shops, restaurants and bars in all international and domestic arrival and departure halls. Nedbank and ABSA banks have branches here, and ATM’s and currency exchange services are never more than two minutes walk away. A post office is located between terminals 2 and 3.
The main duty free shop in Johannesburg Airport, Big Five Duty Free, is second in size only to that of London’s Heathrow Airport. Florists, sunglasses shops, and many other outlets are located around the terminals.
Baggage trolleys and porter services are available in the various drop-off zones. For security reasons, visitors are advised only to use blue-uniformed porters displaying ACSA-authorised permits.
A ten-room conference facility is located in the domestic arrivals hall, terminal 3. Fax, secretarial and telephone services are all provided.
Ramps throughout the terminals make wheelchair access straightforward. 2 lifts have Braille and there are special parking facilities available. A sticker should be displayed if parking in a reserved area. Those without the appropriate pass should phone ACSA-JIA Help Desk (0)11 921 6262) for help.
Information desks are located in all terminals. The South African Tourism Board and Info Africa have information desks in terminal 2.

Private bus companies offer regular services to the city and surrounding areas. Also, many local hotels operate airport pick-up shuttle services via a pre-arranged telephone call. For reliable information on site, there is a public transport desk in the Domestic Arrivals area.
The airport taxi rank is situated outside the arrivals area. The trip into Johannesburg city should take between 30 and 45 minutes. Minibus services also operate from this site.
To drive into Johannesburg from the airport, take the M2 or R24 west upon leaving the airport main gates, and follow signs to the city. Johannesburg is about 12 miles away with a drive time of about 35 minutes. The R21 North will take you to nearby Pretoria in around 45 minutes.
Johannesburg Airport has underground, multi-storey and ground-level car parking facilities, all within close proximity of the main terminal building. Shuttle bus services operate between the more distant parking areas every five minutes. On the spot payment or pre-paid parking cards are the two options.
