Colon Guide

Colon City is home to over 200,000 and is the world's largest duty-free port. It was founded in 1850 by Americans working on the Panama railroad. Located in the heart of the city is a statue commemorating the town's founding fathers: Aspinwall, Stephens and Chauncey. Along with many others, they battled deadly tropical illnesses including yellow fever and malaria.

The city is highly urban and is best known for its high violent crime rate. You may wonder where the attraction to the city lies for tourists. Well, while Panama's second largest city has a notorious reputation it provides fantastic access to one of the country's most underdeveloped and inaccessible provinces: Colon.

When exploring this province, car hire is essential. It enables your party to travel safely and independently in air conditioned comfort. Within Colon City, car hire can be found at: Plaza Colon 2000. Colon 2000 is a modern cruise port and duty-free shopping complex.

A car hire allows you to take in all the natural beauty that this region possesses. The Panama-Colon Road provides a fast route to Panama City. Driving from the Pacific coast to the turquoise Caribbean takes just two hours.

With no tides, the Atlantic coast offers some of the safest swimming in the world as well as beautiful, white, sandy beaches. The most famous beach here is Playa Langosta.

Nearby, the pretty seaside town of Portobello has a number of antiquities which beg to be explored. The ruins of five Spanish forts and the Aduana Real treasure house can be found here. Sir Francis Drake's lead tomb is located just outside the town. The Customs Building is home to a museum dedicated to Panama's immigrants. The Black Christ Church and Museum is located in the town centre. The town also has a busy yachting marina.
