Stavanger Airport, sometimes referred to as Sola Airport, is located just a 20 minute drive from Stavanger city and is Norway's third largest airport. The city and the surrounding area have lots to offer tourists, and the best way to fit it all in is by picking up car hire at Stavanger Airport.
First stop should be the Flyhistorisk Museum, which is an aeronautical museum located right near the airport. Founded in 1984, it is run solely by volunteers and is based in a former WWII, German-built aircraft hangar. Various Norwegian airlines are on display there, including Braathens SAFE and Fjellfly, which have now merged into the SAS. It also houses a jet fighter and probably the only remaining Arado Ar 96 in the world.
Cheap car hire at Stavanger Airport also allows you to explore Norway's fourth-largest city of the same name, which is situated on the country's south-west coast. Here you will find the Stavanger Oil Museum, with its displays of drilling equipment and submersibles. It also houses a mock oil platform and shows some interesting video presentations.
Also accessible by car rental at Stavanger Airport is the Canning Museum, which boasts a few good hands-on exhibits, despite its rather boring-sounding subject matter. Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger) also offers drivers the wooden houses and winding streets preserved from the time when Stavanger was Norway's canning capital.
Hiking and climbing are popular activities in the area, and Sola beach, situated near the airport, offers a pleasant sandy strip that is popular with windsurfers all year-round and sunbathers when the weather permits.
