If you are looking to take a holiday to one of the more historic parts of the Netherlands, you can't go wrong with The Hague, also known in Holland as Den Haag. Once you visit there, you will want to go to Den Haag West for your car hire and then start your holiday in earnest. Fortunately, this is located near the city's border with the North Sea, which will allow you a starting point from which to work from. Starting at Den Haag West, you can explore the city's reputation as a centre for peace.
The Peace Palace, site of the International Criminal Court, is located in the southeast part of the city. The city hosted its first peace conference I 1899 and since then has gained more and more acclaim as a place where countries can work out there problems. The Hague is also home to the International Court of Justice as well as the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which was established in 1907. Any of these places will give visitors a real glimpse at how the international community works out its differences.
There are also other notable tourist attractions that span out from Den Haag West, including the Lange Voorhout, an avenue which has historic homes, embassies and other luxurious building. Looking for something a little more offbeat? The Hague hosts the Panorama Mesdag, a museum which has a 360-degree panoramic painting of the seafront at Scheveningen. The painting looks so realistic, and is presented in such an interesting what that you will get a great idea for what the seafront was like in the 19th century in the Netherlands.
One thing to note is that The Hague may not have an exciting night life, like Amsterdam or other cities around Europe. With fewer college students, life in Den Haag West can be a bit calmer and peaceful.
