Hoensbroek Guide

Guide

Hoensbroek is a small town in the municipality of Heerlen resting near the foothills of Limburg. In medieval times the town was known as Gebrook, which means swampy landscape, and was owned by the Hoen family. Eventually the name merged to Hoensbroek. The beautiful countryside is a pleasant place to explore with rich history, green lands and villages throughout the area.

The history of the municipality dates back to 1060 and evidence is seen in medieval buildings. Hoensbroek's most famous medieval building is the Kasteel Hoensbroek named after Knight Hoen. The castle dates back to 1250 and is considered one of the most beautiful ancient castles in the country.

Although Hoensbroek is small in population, the residents are friendly and welcoming. There are a few hotels in the town and surrounding areas offering quaint, quality accommodations to meet any budget requirement.

Getting around Hoensbroek is most easily accomplished by car hire. Explore surrounding villages and get a feel for the history of the region. Nearby in Heerlen you will find culture and entertainment for any interest. One of Heerlen's most famous modern buildings is the Glaspaleis built in 1935.

Shoppers will want to visit the unique shops and boutiques throughout Heerlen as well as major department stores. There are several specialty stores that carry local wares and designs crafted by local artisans. While in Heerlen take time to visit the Thermen Museum where you can experience Heerlen's Roman history.
