Vancouver International Airport Guide

Vancouver International Airport

Vancouver International Airport is a major facility (second busiest in Canada), bringing in visitors from around the world. It makes for a useful launch point for those planning RV hire, with several excellent recreational vehicle parks nearby. The road network is excellent and you can bypass the city altogether to head into the mountains or visit the islands.

Vancouver itself is worth spending time in as it is not your run of the mill North American city, boasting a glorious setting on English Bay and playing host to a number of outstanding manmade and natural attractions. The world class ski resort of Whistler is within easy reach, as is Vancouver Island.

Attractions

VanDusen Botanical Garden is one of the top attractions near to the airport and RV sites. Set out directly between the airport and downtown, it has a wonderful collection of trees and shrubs, as well as a large maze. In addition, the Fraser River Park is close and is good for walks and plane spotting.

Downtown Vancouver itself has many standout sights, museums and parks. Stanley Park is a real draw, with water almost all the way around and some amazing trails and attractions. The Vancouver Aquarium is in here.

Downtown also has historic places like Gastown and the Dr Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden. Alternatively, you could simply drive right through and head over the bridge for the North Shore. From here, tourers have direct access to ski resorts like Whistler, or head south to Tsawwassen and take the ferry to Vancouver Island.

Camping

Plaza Mobile Home & RV Park is a quiet, family-owned place in Surrey, a fair way east of the airport and Vancouver. It is best for those who don't need to be right in the city, with easier driving to Vancouver's surrounds, including to ocean beaches.

Parkcanada RV Park is located in Tsawwassen to the south of airport. This is an excellent spot to be within reach of the airport and Vancouver, as well as for the ferry over to Vancouver Island. There's a great range of RV sites here, including pull-thru ones, and they typically come with a lawn and gravel patch. Facilities include a lounge, showers and playground and there is shopping, golf and beaches nearby.

Brownsville Pub & RV Park is a lower cost place in Surrey, just over the Fraser River from New Westminster. A variety of sites is available for recreational vehicles, along with storage. A store and pub is also on hand, along with a boat launch. Brownsville offers weekly and monthly rates, too.

Driving

Granville Street goes between the airport and downtown through South Vancouver. The roads here are typically wide enough to handle RVs in all areas, though avoid driving downtown during rush hour if you can. Much of the city is on a grid, where street meter parking is often possible.

  • Speed limits in the city: 30-50kph.
  • Speed limits on national roads: 100-110kph.
  • Help number: 911.
