Venice Airport Guide

Car Hire

Set on the Italian mainland adjacent to the Veneta Lagoon, Venice Airport hosts more than eight million travellers each year, many of whom are headed to catch a glimpse of timeless Venetian culture and the city’s one-of-a-kind floating geography. The facility is also known as Venice Marco Polo Airport and is only about 20 minutes from Venice proper and about 35 minutes from the sun-soaked beaches of Lido de Jesolo by car hire. However, passengers can also get away from the airport via taxi, bus services and to some destinations, by boat.

Who to Book With
Venice Airport offers a good range of car hire brands. These include Italian firms Locauto and Maggiore, in addition to global brands Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Hertz and Avis. Check-in areas can be found on the arrivals level.

Need to Know Essentials
Bring the following information to the rental check-in counter at Venice Airport:

- Your booking confirmation
- Your driver’s licence (check with your rental provider to see if an International Driver’s Permit is required)
- A valid credit card
- Your passport

For more info read our FAQ's.

Driving
Italian road rules are generally on par with the United Kingdom and places elsewhere in Europe. Italy drives on the right; speed limits are capped at 81mph (130kph) on motorways and 31mph (50kph) on city streets. Be prepared for a large number of motorbikes in some urban areas. Seatbelts are compulsory for all persons in the vehicle. Parking may be particularly difficult in Mestre and other areas surrounding the Via Liberta Bridge to Venice. Street parking regulations are strictly enforced.

Refer to our Italy travel guide for more information about driving in the region.

Transport

Ground transport at Venice Airport is available in a number of different forms. Car rental may be particularly advantageous for those heading to Mestre and nearby beach destinations. Additionally, taxis are always available though fairly pricey, whilst scheduled bus departures provide connections to a handful of destinations including Venice and Mestre. Finally, shuttles can connect passengers to local rail stations and water taxi service is on offer to several points in Venice and elsewhere in the lagoon.

Trains
Rail service is not available directly from the airport. ATVO shuttle buses depart regularly for the Venice-Santa Lucia and Mestre Venice railway stations. The one-way fare is about £6 and return tickets are about £11. Visit the ATVO website for schedules.

Taxis
Taxis are on offer 24 hours from the designated taxi ranks located outside the arrivals hall of the terminal building. Fares are metered; the trip to Venice rail station will cost about £25 and a trip into Mestre will cost about £20. Alternatively, private water taxis are available directly to hotels in Venice and Murano for about £77.

Buses
There are regular ATVO bus departures for Venice’s Piazzale Roma Square and a number of destinations in the region including Pordenone/Aviano and seaside resort areas. For full schedules and information head to the ATVO website or visit the ATVO sales counter in the Arrivals hall; opening hours are from 08:00 to 24:00.

Facilities

Terminals
All commercial flights to and from Venice Airport utilise the same terminal building. The terminal is located just off of route SS14 about five miles northeast of Mestre. The facility is separated into three floors, with the ground level dedicated to arrivals and the level above to departure facilities. The third floor is used largely for administrative purposes and only a few passenger services.

Parking
There are nearly 3,000 parking spaces available at Venice Airport spread across numerous car parks adjacent to the terminal building. Spaces can be booked in advance here. Rates in long-stay facilities vary heavily; the price is about £4 for a stay of up to two hours, £10.50 for a 12-hour stay and a weeklong stay will cost about £69. In the short-stay car parks, the price for a two-hour stay is around £5, whilst the daily rate is about £15 and a weeklong stay costs about £78.

Wi-Fi
Wireless internet access is available at Venice Airport free of charge. Connect via the Guglielmo Venice Airport network.

Information Services
Arriving passengers can find a tourism information counter on the arrivals level outside of baggage claim, whilst a general information desk is located on the departures level near the check-in areas (reach by phone at the number below).

Restaurants and Bars
Venice Airport offers a handful options for drinking and dining – nearly all are located on the departures level. Limited items are available at Café Marco Polo on the north end of the check-in area; head beyond security for a better selection at Bricco Café and another Café Marco Polo outlet. Items available include sandwiches, pizzas, salads and beverages. There are also several coffee shops dotted around the terminal.

Marco Polo VIP Club

Money and ATMs
Head to the arrivals level to find a good array of banking services at Banca di Roma (including ATMs). Additionally, Travelex currency exchange booths are located on all three floors of the terminal building.

Shopping
Retail fare is somewhat limited at Venice Airport compared to other heavily travelled airports in Italy. However, a decent range of duty-free goods is on offer beyond the security checkpoint on the south side of the terminal (departure point for flights leaving the Schengen region). Other retailers represented (airside departures area) include Zoccai Jewels, the Football Club, Golden Point, Boggi, Stefenel and Swatch.

Frequently asked questions

Is Carrentals.co.uk the cheapest? Yes, we offer a guarantee of the lowest price - because we compare various retailers, we can always offer you the best price in town. What do I need to do when picking up a car? To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient. Are there any additional costs? In general, our rates are all-inclusive. Should there be any additional costs, our booking department will get in touch with you before issuing the invoice. Should you object, you can always cancel your reservation with no obligations attached (at least 48 hours in advance). What kind of insurance is applicable to my car rental? In general, Liability Insurance, Fire Insurance, All-Risks Insurance and Theft Insurance are included in the cost of your rental car. What is a worry-free label? This label indicates that a rental car satisfies the following requirements: Unlimited kilometers, no excess liability (and no excess cover available), sustainable energy policy, and that the car rental company has a good reputation. Availability of cars satisfying these four requirements will speed up the selection of a suitable vehicle for you. How can I change or cancel my reservation? You can cancel your reservation through "My Account". We recommend contacting us by phone if your changes to your booking or cancellation takes place at short notice (48 hours or less). When will I get a confirmation of my booking? Most reservations will receive confirmation within minutes after payment takes place. We recommend contacting our Booking Department for last minute reservations (pick-up within 48 hours). Which car rental companies are compared by Carrentals.co.uk? at this location
