Montevarchi Guide

In the province of Arezzo, of Tuscany, Italy, your car hire may guide you to the comune Montevarchi. This comune is home to just under twenty three thousand residents, and is the Chief Town of the Arezzo province. In ancient times there was an important crossroads market in this town where textiles, ceramics, wool and silk were traded. Here there is still an exciting market, and is home to a Prada outlet.

Though Montevarchi has been settled since the Roman age, a castle was erected in the 13th century, overlooking this precious trade route, which is when the town really came into its own, though a well known and visited church, the Saint Lorenz Collegiate Church, was erected prior to then and restored in the 18th century. Should your car hire bring you here, you can find many amazing artistic creations, such as Our Lady in Glory and two Angels, a sculpture by Giovanni Baratta, as well as a 17th century tabernacle there is a half chest portrayal of Our Lady with the Child, and a dome painted entirely at the beginning of the eighteenth century.

Your car hire may tour you through many areas of historic significance, as not only was the area a gateway to trade, but it also presented as a military stronghold at times, as well as an agricultural asset, and home to a variety of artisans. Montevarchi witnessed many a bloody battle waged between Arezzo and Florence. The sixteenth century would be when the more modern Montevarchi was borne. In this century, this village along the Arno River was dominated by the Medici's Grand Dukedom. In this society, artisans that manufactured wool became more like factories, and the streets became more urban, as public buildings were erected, the roads were upgraded, and residential homes became beautiful, luxurious dwellings that you may stop your car hire to admire when passing.
