Milazzo, located on the island of Sicily in Italy, along the northern coast, was constructed on a spit of land jotting out into the clear blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is usually used as a stop-off on the way to the Aeolian Islands.

The one must-see attraction in Milazzo is the citadel, with its huge imposing exterior fortifications (pictured right). Within these walls is a splendid Norman castle that resembles the Tower of London and is a fine example of Norman architecture. The citadel’s walls also house their own cathedral and other historic buildings.

Another interesting place to spend time is the Civic Museum, which details the history of the city from its founding by the Ancient Greeks until the present day.

Food options are centred around seafood. The local’s favourite fish restaurant is Il Covo del Pirata on Via Garibaldi, and for pizza head to Pizzeria Tonino on Via Manzoni. Shopping options are limited and based around High Street stores and tailors.

Milazzo is near to Messina where Shakespeare based the setting for 'Much Ado About Nothing'. Also easily accessible by hydrofoil from Milazzo are the Aeolian Islands, with their beautiful scenery, castles, volcanoes, unspoilt beaches, deep sea fishing, thermal resorts, and water sports. Due to their volcanic origins, the islands are very rugged with deep caverns, steep cliffs and sweeping views, and can be hiked around by the more energetically minded.

Transport

To reach Milazzo by air you can fly to Catania Airport and take the bus, which traverses between the two points once a day. Trains pass through Milazzo regularly, enroute to Palermo and Messina. This is a great way for getting around the region if you are not happy driving abroad.
