Francavilla al Mare Guide

Francavilla al Mare is a fine seaside resort and a cultural center that is located to the south of Pescara. Francalvilla al Mare is a very ancient city whose roots go back to pre-historical times. Evidence of the place having been occupied since pre historical times have been found at St. Cecilia. Francavilla, a Latin term meaning 'free town', got its name from the fact that it was granted freedom from all taxes in the year 1162. It was a flourishing seaport that was buzzing with commercial activity until it was plundered by the Turkish in the sixteenth century. The city rose to prominence in the nineteenth century as a center for culture in which prominent literary and artistic figures gathered to promote art and culture. By this time, it had also become an important seaside resort.

Francavilla al Mare has several good hotels and restaurants such as Villa Maria, Corallo, Diamante, La Fenice, Mare Blu, Parana, Park Hotel Alcione, and several others to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Car hire services can be booked from these hotels.

There are a number of interesting places that can be conveniently visited using the car hire services that are available in the city. Some of the more important sight seeing spots include the following: Churches: There are several churches in Francavilla al Mare that are ancient and important from the artistic, as well as the religious, perspectives. Churches dedicated to St. John and St. Francis are two of the important churches that date back to the twelfth century, and combine two architectural styles. Convent Maria of Jesus: Apart from being of historical interest, this convent founded in the fifteenth century was the meeting place for Italian artists and literary figures of the time, led by the famous painter Michetti.
