Bologna Airport, also known as Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport, is located around four miles northwest of the Italian city of Bologna. Situated in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, a simply stunning area, the airport is an ideal place to rent a vehicle. This practical option allows visitors to experience all the region has to offer, with driving from the airport to the surrounding areas easy.

There are 10 car rental companies represented within the airport. International companies, such as Avis, Europcar and Hetrz, have representatives, along with local outfits Autovia, Budget Autonoleggio, Sixt and Locauto rent. All offer a range of vehicles that can be booked in advance or on the day of arrival.

In order to collect a reserved vehicle, you must provide the following documentation:

- The credit card used when making the reservation
- A valid passport
- Proof of address, such as a utility bill
- The booking confirmation email or number
Driving in the cities can be confusing due to the many one-way systems. Traffic is also an issue and can add to the journey time. Outside of the cities, a road atlas will come in handy as the country roads tend to be poorly signposted. Toll roads are common and well maintained; however, they usually only take cash so carry change with you on long journeys. Petrol stations are common but not all accept foreign cards so carry cash for refuelling.
There is no train station at Bologna Airport; however, there are a number of bus routes linking the airport with surrounding areas. These routes do not operate frequently or through the night. Car hire allows visitors to head directly to their destination as the airport is situated near a number of main motorways. Other than this, a taxi is the only option, which can be costly.

There are a number of bus services to surrounding areas. A shuttle service runs from the airport to the nearest train station. This service takes around 20 minutes. Direct buses are scheduled every two hours. Journey time to Ferrera is around 1 hour, while the trip to Florence takes around 1 hour, 30 minutes. There are two terminals at Bologna Airport: one small domestic terminal along with a larger international terminal. The airport now handles over five million passengers a year and as a result, it has become the seventh-busiest airport in Italy. Air France, Air Italy and Ryanair all charter flights here from a number of destinations in mainland Europe and the UK.
Express parking on the first floor offers short-stay parking. This lot is ideal for dropping passengers off; however, there are also three more car parks: P1, P2 and P3. These lots are all located a short walk from the airport. Prices vary but start at £15 for three days (including a weekend). Car parking can be booked in advanced, paid for on arrival or on return. All car parks have cash and card facilities for easy payment.

The International Terminal of Bologna Airport is adapted for passengers with reduced mobility. There are lifts throughout the terminal, along with adapted bathroom facilities and priority boarding. A Banca Carisbo-Gruppo Sanpaolo IMI Bank ATM is located on the ground floor of the International Terminal. The ATM distributes both euro and pounds sterling, and it is also possible to exchange a number of currencies. Other ATMs can be found next to the Arrivals and Departures boards of both terminals.
There is a large shopping complex where passengers can purchase a number of duty-free items and browse some well-known Italian brands. Duty-free here includes tobacco, perfume and beauty products, along with a selection of beers and spirits. There is also a Furla concession and a Fashion Gate.
