Wexford’s coast is its main attraction, and not only does it boast soft, sandy beaches but also excellent areas for surfing, windsurfing, snorkelling and diving. Scuba diving off the coast of Wexford is most commonly known for its abundance of interesting wrecks that can be explored from six to 60 metres below the ocean’s surface.

Walk through the tranquil Johnstone Castle Gardens and you will glimpse the fairytale turreted castle shimmering in the waters of the manmade lake. Also visit The National Museum of Agriculture & Rural Life which can be found in the 19th century farm buildings scattered around the castle grounds. Tourists can view the major famine exhibition, telling the history of the potato and the great disaster of the 1840s, is at the museum. The Spectrum Print Gallery hosts collections of fine art created by contemporary artists, while at ‘Creative Energy’ in the Wexford Heritage Centre you can see crafts people give demonstrations of their work.

Wexford boasts a number of excellent cafes and restaurants, and a wonderful selection of craft shops. Visit any of the pubs in Wexford and you will be treated to live traditional Irish music. Take a relaxing stroll along the sandy beach, bathe in the refreshing sea or simply soak up some sun.

If you are looking to pass the day touring and sightseeing outside of the town, then the South East Coastal Drive won’t disappoint you. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing and rural journey along the coastline from Wexford Town to Ardmore and experience breathtaking scenery, heritage sites and tranquil villages. There are a number of signposted diversions from the route which are also highly recommended and well worth a visit.

By air
Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports are all within easy reach of Wexford. Dublin is situated 1hr 50min north of Wexford along the M11, Cork is a 2hr 25min drive to the southwest, and Shannon Airport is located 2hr 46min west of Wexford. Transport facilities are good at each of these airports, with buses, shuttles, trains, taxis and car rentals available.

The town is also serviced by the extensive national carrier, Bus Eireann. Book tickets in advance of travelling or from a ticket office at the station, in order to reserve a seat. Certain times of the year can get very busy, especially over the summer months.

What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.
