Reykjavik Guide

Guide

Iceland is quickly becoming one of Europe's most appealing destinations to visit, with its numerous natural features including; hot springs, magnificent glaciers, geysers, lave deserts, active volcanoes and not forgetting the midnight sun. In addition, Iceland is also rich in history, folklore, literature, and Viking tradition.

Reykjavík ('Smoky Bay') is Iceland's capital and the world's northernmost capital. Reykjavík, with its severe weather conditions, strong winds and reliance upon geothermal heat has another reputation, it's smog free. Exploring this cold city is best done with car rentals. Avoid walking miles around the freezing cold streets of Reykjavik, instead opt for cheap car hire, and see the sights from the comfort of your own vehicle. Snow chains are advisable!

Explore Reykjavik

For a cultural insight visit the Old Town, the city's hub, consisting of grassy parks, lakes, markets and museums. For Norse and Icelandic culture, the National Museum has exhibits of religious and folk relics, and tools dating from the period of the island’s settlement. Its prized exhibit is a period church door carved around 1200, depicting a Norse battle scene.

Immediately behind the museum is the Magnússon Institute, containing a famous collection of works returned from Denmark to independent Iceland, including the Landnámabók and Njáls Saga. By far the city's most memorable structure is the beautiful Hallgrímskirkja church built to resemble a mountain of lava.

The city's landscape is marked by its brightly coloured houses and white-washed wooden buildings. Nearly everything of interest is within walking distance of the old settlement. Reykjavik as a wealth of hot outdoor spas and swimming pools, as the city experiences a constant influx of geothermal water from the ground.

For a night out on the town, try the Iceland Runtur, akin to the pub crawl, which involves trawling through the city's hip bars, live music venues and discos, where you can dance the night away with a sophisticated crowd.

Reykjavik's backyard offers unlimited trekking possibilities, ranging from an afternoon hike to a two-week wilderness trek. The best hiking trails in the whole of Iceland are located in the rural areas of Hornstrandir, Landmannalaugar and Látrabjarg, or in Reykjanesfólkvangur, and is easily accessible by car on well maintained roads.

Reykjavik also offers world-class skiing facilities, Akureyri, Bláfjöll (just southeast of Reykjavík) and Hlíðarfjall (near Akureyri). Sledding’s a must on the Langjökull Icecap, or whitewater rafting on the Hvítá (White River). Golf fans can tee up for the Arctic Open, held in the North East of the Island at Akureyri. Its attraction is an all-night 'midnight sun' golf tournament fielding amateurs and professionals from around the world.

Transport

From Reykjavik, it’s only about a three-hour flight from most European cities and five hours from the North American Eastern seaboard. Tourists may find they have to travel by air to reach a lot of Icelands' attractions and major cities, like Akureyri, depending on the distance and road conditions at the time.

The nearest airport to Reykjavik city center, only 50kms drive West, is Reykjavik Airport, also known as Keflavík International Airport. Car rental providers operate from desks in the arrivals area. These include Budget, Hertz and Europcar. We offer a greater selection of cars and car hire providers for you to choose from, to find the perfect car hire.

There are no trains operating throughout Iceland for public use. This is due to the cold and unpredictable weather conditions that Iceland experiences.Buses are the only form of public service used throughout the city and Iceland's other cities, making car hire a highly advantageous option.

What most people want to know

The following questions and answers are a selection of the most popular questions. If you do not find the answer to your question, have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact us.

Is Carrentals.co.uk the cheapest?

Yes, we offer a guarantee of the lowest price - because we compare various retailers, we can always offer you the best price in town.

What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.

Are there any additional costs?

In general, our rates are all-inclusive. Should there be any additional costs, our booking department will get in touch with you before issuing the invoice. Should you object, you can always cancel your reservation with no obligations attached (at least 48 hours in advance).

What kind of insurance is applicable to my car rental?

Availability of cars satisfying these four requirements will speed up the selection of a suitable vehicle for you.

How can I change or cancel my reservation?

You can cancel your reservation through "My Account". We recommend contacting us by phone if your changes to your booking or cancellation takes place at short notice (48 hours or less).
