Kalamata Airport (KLX) is the main gateway to the province of Peloponnese in southern Greece, and is located around 15 minutes drive from the town of Kalamata. Car hire is available from the Airport from Avis, Europcar and Hertz suppliers, which will save passengers having to arrange airport transfers for onward journeys.
The airport has flights from many European destinations especially during the peak holiday season whilst there are weekly connecting flights to the capital Athens and Thessalonika. Facilities at the airport include Luncheonette, a great little food bar to grab a drink and some food, duty free shop selling tobacco, perfumes and food and drink products, there are also kiosks selling newspapers, magazines, refreshments and souvenirs in the departure lounge.
For visitors to Kalamata there are a few sites of interest to see including the 13th century Kalamata Castle and Epicuran Apollo Temple along with Archaeological Museums such as the one at Kalamata Benakeion. Getting around these sites will be possible on foot or by using the public buses, but if you wish to travel out of Kalamata to the beautiful surrounding lands then we highly advise all travellers to invest in a hire car.
For touring around the area, the E55 motorway passes through the city from Pylos on the western coast through to Sparti inland. The rail network connects Kalamata to Messini, Pyrgos and Kyparissia whilst the bus service connects to Athens and Tripolis. The port connects Kalamata to the island of Crete and the port at Chania which are fascinating places to visit if you have the time.
Accommodation in Kalamata ranges from large family hotels to smaller family business bed and breakfasts. If you are looking for more of a private stay the villas and apartments can be rented privately, especially during the summer season.
