Molyvos Guide

Guide

Lesvos Island is rich in over 3,000 years of history, with stunning beaches and fascinating scenery. Nestled on a small mountain, the picturesque village of Molyvos is one of the islands best-known resorts and artists' colonies. Molyvos is situated an hour north (Highway 38) of the island’s main travel hub, Mytilini.

Explore Molyvos

Famous for its medieval architecture, Molyvos is overlooked by a dramatic Byzantine castle, one of its most popular attractions. The township, built of stone, has a distinctly historic atmosphere and the popular harbour is well renowned for its uninterrupted views of the bay and is rated one of the most beautiful harbours in Greece.

Walking through Molyvos Old Town is a must, despite its uphill wind. The cobbled streets are covered by vines which allow a pleasant day’s walk. Heading towards the castle, you can visit many museums and galleries, including the interesting archaeological museum. The castle plays host to many concerts including well-known Greek musicians and other festivals during the summer.

Molyvos has plenty of interesting stores, from jewellery boutiques to pastry shops. The Old town houses many fine restaurants with views of the coast as well as superb seafood. Numerous ouzeries line the harbour’s promenade with a chance for the visitor to sing along with the entertaining Greek musicians late into the night.

Outside Molyvos, the Bay of Kaloni is the island’s nature capital. Famous for its anchovies and shellfish, this modern town is a thriving summer resort with long sandy beaches. Also worth visiting is Agiassos, an attractive village famed for its pottery and home to an interesting Folk Art Museum.

Transport

Mytilini has a small modern airport, with four flights arriving daily from Athens International Airport. Car hire is available here. Book online in advance of travel to secure the best deals from a wide range of cars. You may find yourself without a car if you you leave it until arriving at the airport.

Nightly ferries depart from Athens’ Piraeus Port to Mytilini (duration:13 hours) and the recommended Mytilini and Theopholis are both modern comfortable ships with bars, restaurants and lounges to enjoy.

Taxis and buses are also available, although taxis are fairly expensive per kilometre travelled and buses are not as reliable. If you would like to travel around the area to see all of its fabulous attractions then car hire is the way forward.

What most people want to know

The following questions and answers are a selection of the most popular questions. If you do not find the answer to your question, have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact us.

Is Carrentals.co.uk the cheapest?

Yes, we offer a guarantee of the lowest price - because we compare various retailers, we can always offer you the best price in town.

What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.

Are there any additional costs?

In general, our rates are all-inclusive. Should there be any additional costs, our booking department will get in touch with you before issuing the invoice. Should you object, you can always cancel your reservation with no obligations attached (at least 48 hours in advance).

What kind of insurance is applicable to my car rental?

In general, Liability Insurance, Fire Insurance, All-Risks Insurance and Theft Insurance are included in the cost of your rental car.

What is a worry-free label?

This label indicates that a rental car satisfies the following requirements: Unlimited kilometers, no excess liability (and no excess cover available), sustainable energy policy, and that the car rental company has a good reputation. Availability of cars satisfying these four requirements will speed up the selection of a suitable vehicle for you.

How can I change or cancel my reservation?

You can cancel your reservation through "My Account". We recommend contacting us by phone if your changes to your booking or cancellation takes place at short notice (48 hours or less).

When will I get a confirmation of my booking?

Most reservations will receive confirmation within minutes after payment takes place. We recommend contacting our Booking Department for last minute reservations (pick-up within 48 hours).
