Lesvos, part of the East Aegean group, is the third largest island in Greece. Shaped like a triangle with one of the three principle cities at each point, this island has both popular tourist destinations and more rugged locations for the adventurous.

The capital of the island is Mitilini. This city has a thriving modern port and both sides of the harbour have good nightlife. The museums of Archaeology and Theophilis offer a glimpse into the history of the island. On the outskirts of town are several good tavernas and an outdoor cinema operating from May to September.

Molivos, the second point of the triangle, is the most popular tourist destination on the island. This city is a picture-perfect seaside village, containing very good tavernas as well as gourmet restaurants. The castle in the center of the town offers a sweeping panorama from its hilltop perch.

On the third point of the triangle is Eressos. Due to the geography of the island this city is more difficult to reach but contains an incredible mile long beach. It is quieter and more traditional than the other two main cities on the island.

As bus service between the cities of this island is infrequent and renting a car is the best way to tour the island. The east coast road between Mitilini and Mandamados is particularly scenic, and Mandamados contains a famous Greek Orthodox icon as well as several good beaches.

Olympic and Aegean airlines both offer daily flights to and from Athens and less often to other islands in the area.
