Hersonissos Guide

Guide

Hersonissos, a hectic little town, is a maze of small villages comprising a pleasurable holiday resort. Hersonissos is a fairly modernised town full of history, and with no ugly high-rise buildings. Scattered around the town are many small ancient ruins for visitors to enjoy. These are easily toured on foot, however, if you wish to travel to the outer parts of the town, and into the countryside we highly advise you to book car hire in Hersonissos. Book with us today and we'll find you the cheapest prices from top companies like Hertz, Sixt and Europcar.

Explore Hersonissos

The focal point of the town is the harbour. This area is filled with an array of bars and restaurants on a busy raised waterfront, and there are steps down to the small beaches in front. Inland is the long and perpetually busy selection of bars, shops, tour agencies and restaurants.

There are a number of bars and restaurants along the raised waterfront. The streets are usually busy with eateries, watering holes and games arcades. There is also a selection of nightclubs and bars, some with live music, and you’ll find plenty of taverna-style restaurants serving traditional foods, as well as pizza and pasta dishes.

The traditional villages of Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Old Hersonissos are located about a mile inland on the hillside surrounding the main town. These are quiet and picturesque, despite the modest modern development bringing them closer together. Book a hire car to enjoy these beautiful places at your own pace.

There are a number of local excursions to view Crete’s historic remains, the most impressive being the delightful Knossos and the archaeological museum at Heraklion. Day trips by boat to several of the beautiful islands are popular, including trips to the deserted former leper colony of Spinalonga.

Transport

By bus
A very frequent bus service along the main road connects all the resorts along this stretch of coast with Heraklion. Prices are very cheap and reasonable, just pay when you jump on. Check bus times so you don't have to hang about too long.

By taxi
Taxis are available and pretty cheap, unless they are used for long distance journeys, or everyday quick stops.

By car hire
A hire car is the most ideal form of transportation on Crete and we advise all of our customers to book in advance. Car rentals are also available from Heraklion Airport, also referred to as Nikos Kazantzakis Airport. Look out for rental suppliers Eurodollar, Avis, AutoHellas, and Travel Star. We compare over fifty suppliers so you will find cheaper prices if you book in advance with us.

What most people want to know

The following questions and answers are a selection of the most popular questions. If you do not find the answer to your question, have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact us.
Is Carrentals.co.uk the cheapest? Yes, we offer a guarantee of the lowest price - because we compare various retailers, we can always offer you the best price in town. What do I need to do when picking up a car? To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient. Are there any additional costs? In general, our rates are all-inclusive. Should there be any additional costs, our booking department will get in touch with you before issuing the invoice. Should you object, you can always cancel your reservation with no obligations attached (at least 48 hours in advance). What kind of insurance is applicable to my car rental? In general, Liability Insurance, Fire Insurance, All-Risks Insurance and Theft Insurance are included in the cost of your rental car. What is a worry-free label? This label indicates that a rental car satisfies the following requirements: Unlimited kilometers, no excess liability (and no excess cover available), sustainable energy policy, and that the car rental company has a good reputation. Availability of cars satisfying these four requirements will speed up the selection of a suitable vehicle for you. How can I change or cancel my reservation? You can cancel your reservation through "My Account". We recommend contacting us by phone if your changes to your booking or cancellation takes place at short notice (48 hours or less). When will I get a confirmation of my booking? Most reservations will receive confirmation within minutes after payment takes place. We recommend contacting our Booking Department for last minute reservations (pick-up within 48 hours).
