Alexandroupolis Airport Guide

Alexandroupolis Airport is an important transportation hub in eastern Greece. It is situated in Loutra, about four miles east of Alexandroupolis. While the airport is one of Greece's busiest, this city is best known for its bustling harbour.

Alexandroupolis sits alongside the Leoforos Dimokratias highway, an important artery that follows portions of the coastline and then quickly connects with Egnatia Odos (E90), a major highway that connects cities in western Greece with Turkey. Visitors with car hire at Alexandroupolis Airport quickly find that this transport hub has enough cultural attractions to warrant staying on a day or two.

When you arrive at the terminal, car rental at Alexandroupolis Airport provides the most convenient means of getting into the city. Buses connect to Alexandroupolis as well as a few neighbouring cities, and taxis are also available. The E90 is the most important motorway, and drivers have to travel east or west in order to connect.

Alexandroupolis Airport offers a limited selection of flights. Aegean Airliens, Olympic Air and Athens Airway all provide service to Athens (55 minutes). In addition to this, Olympic Air also flies to Crete (1 hour, 15 minutes). With cheap car hire at Alexandroupolis Airport, connecting to the city centre as well as the surrounding countryside is easy.

The harbour is four miles west of the airport. Ferries depart for island destinations in the Aegean, with peak periods of traffic in the summer. The railway station backs the port and connects to Thessaloniki (7 hours), Athens (14 hours) as well as to cities in Turkey and Bulgaria.
