Winterberg Guide

Guide

Winterberg, Germany, is a city that dates back to 1270 with attractive scenery, including towering hills and beautiful marshlands. With a variety of unique flora and fauna, it makes for a relaxing and interesting holiday destination.

The visitor's first port of call should be to hire a car and drive just a few short kilometres out of the centre to visit the second highest mountain of the Sauerland, the Kahler Asten. It dominates the skyline and the sources of the Lenne, which starts as an intermittent spring, and the Ruhr Rivers are located on the mountain. This is a really picturesque location for a family day out, or for the more adventurous solo holiday maker, an ideal site to do some rock climbing or skiing in winter. The recently renovated St. George's Hill ski lift, one of the largest in Germany, is a breath-taking attraction. At the summit of the mountain is an observation platform and an hotel built in 1884.

The town itself offers some great opportunities for sightseeing, including a variety of old timbered houses, as well as the old Protestant church with its elegant yet simple architecture.

Just to the north of the city is the In the Light park, where in the summer there are a great many activities to enjoy, including walking, bike riding and miniature golf.

More hiking trails can be found near to the Ruhr source at the foot of the mountain ranges. Make the most of the airy German summers and take a twenty minute walk out to the local woodlands, where you will find beech trees some of which are almost three hundred years old.

Add to this the January dog-sled races and the Catholic Easter processions throughout the town, as well as the July festival programs and the holiday-maker has everything he or she could want from Winterberg!
