Sigmaringen Guide

Guide

Sigmaringen is a city in Baden-Wuttemberg, Germany. It is located in the Danube valley. The city is enclosed with hills and a lot of the area is wooded. Sigmaringen has Winterlingen in the north and Scheer in the east. Mengen and Krauchenwies lie towards the south while Beuron and Stetten lie towards the west of Sigmaringen. Traces of human civilization at Sigmaringen have been found since 1077. Until the mid 1800's the city was under the ruler ship of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Later, it was made a province by the Prussians.

Various famous people were born in this city. The Prince Ferdinand of Romania was born here in the year in 1865 and made the King of Romania in 1914. The founder of the Miller Brewing Company, Frederick Miller was born here in 1824. Currently, Sigmaringen is one of the residences of Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.

The cadet branch of the senior Swabian branch of the Hohenzollern dynasty is the House of Hohenzollern. The Sigmaringen Castle ruins are located at the plateau of the Swabian Alb. This castle was reconstructed in 1893, and a fire broke out reducing most of it into ashes. Now, one can only find the old towers dominating the beautiful scenery of the Swabian Albs.
