Pirna is a small city covering over fifty-three square kilometres in the state of Saxony, Germany. It was reported in 2011 to have a population of approximately 40,000 people, and has grown very little in the past couple of years. It is located in the Elbe Valley where the Mesenitz and Gotteuba Rivers join with the Elbe River, which is also known as one of Central Europe's major rivers. Close by is the capital, Dresden (also the capital of Saxony).

There are many tourist attractions scattered throughout Pirna, which is the reason why car hire is so popular here. One of the city's most prominent tourist attractions are the several burgher's houses, many of which date back to the Renaissance Era, the 16th, and the 17th Century. They are uniquely decorated and a favorite for many visiting tourists.

Just eight kilometres to the west of Pirna are many architectural buildings from the sixteenth century. The municipal museum, built in the early fifteenth century, can be found along with a monastic museum. St. Mary's Church can also be found in Upper Saxony.

Slightly to the southwest of the city of Pirna is the Weesenstein Castle (pictured above). The beautiful baroque gardens can be found in and around the Castle grounds. Amazing paintings adorn the walls of the castle and the wallpaper and ceilings are finely decorated, and beautiful to look at. Various works of art and extremely old architecture are the main attractions here. The majority of the attractions date back over five hundred years and are truly great sites to see.
