Frankfurt Oder is a city in Brandenburg and is located on the River Oder on the Polish- German border, opposite the town of Slubice. Frankfurt Oder has some interesting sights including the tallest building in the whole of Frankfurt, the Oderturm. The Oderturm is 24 stories high and was built between 1968 and 1976. There is a caf on the 23rd floor which has a wonderful panoramic view of the city. Frankfurt has been the setting for a number of well-known German films in recent years and the tower featured prominently in the film Halbe Treppe. Other places of interest are the Oder Bridge that links Frankfurt with Slubice and the Paulinenhof settlement, built for railway employees.
Frankfurt is home to Prussia's University founded in 1506 by the Elector of Brandenburg, who was also an early Chancellor, Bishop Georg von Blumenthal. The University was closed in 1811 and was later re-established in 1991 under a new name which is a combination of its old name, meaning situated at the River Oder, and a new emphasis on its European credentials, hence Viadrina European University. It is one of the smallest universities in Germany.
The Marienkirche is Frankfurt's main church. It has a tower and the original bell is to be found inside the church on a brick pedestal.
As well as the attractions of Frankfurt Oder the main city of Frankfurt am Main is nearby. Frankfurt is known as the Manhatten of Germany as the city has a large number of skyscrapers and is the financial centre of Germany. The city is home to the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, which is Germany's largest stock exchange, and you will also find the seat of the European Central Bank along with many other national and international banks. The city hosts the world's largest motor show every year, the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung and also the Frankfurter Buchmesse, the largest book fair in the world.
